Sure, Ellen DeGeneres did a superb job as the host of the most prestigious awards show there is. But now it’s my turn. And I’m going to skip right past the nominees and just go straight to the victors. Hey, these are my awards, remember? “The Departed” won four awards rightfiilly so some would argue —and “Little Miss Sunshine” snagged a few gold statues, too. But I didn’t see any Tar Heels on the list That’s all about to change. Here are my picks for the 2007 Charlie “Choo-Choo” Justice Awards: ■ Tyler Hansbrough, men’s basketball Best Actor in a Leading Role Twelve times this season, the sophomore forward from Missouri has led the team in both scoring and rebounding. Hansbrough burns opponents for 18.7 points a game and pulls in 7.6 rebounds a game. UNC fans hope he is saving his best per formances for the final scenes, however, as the Tar Heels will need big games from the big man if they are going to see success in March and April. ■ Ivory Latta, women’s basketball Best Actress in a Leading Role Not only do the senior’s on court antics leave opposing point guards stuck on their heels, they are also able to fire up the crowds at Carmichael Auditorium. Latta was recently named to the All- ACC first team, something she has accomplished the previous two years as well. She is averag ing 16.2 points a game so far this season and boasts the best 3- point percentage on the team. It should come as no surprise that the rest of the ACC is ready for her to go. ■ Robert Woodard, baseball Best Actor in a Supporting Role Woodard earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2006, making 17 starts apd pitching a career- fltjUjjj' (ffartol Help Wanted FINANCIAL ASSISTANT: OE Enterprises, Inc. needs a financial assistant: Associate Degree in Finance or Business +2 years experience in fi nance or business management required; strong background in computer applications including Quickßooks, Excel, Word. Now that superstar pitch ers Andrew Miller and Daniel Bard, who overshadowed him for much of last season, have made the leap to professional baseball, Woodard can try to take Tyler’s statue for next year. ■ Elizabeth Guess, women’s soccer Best Actress in a Supporting Role Playing with national stand out Heather O’Reilly, this senior scored the game-winning over time goal for the Tar Heels in the ACC championship game and was named tournament MVP. Guess also came up huge for the Tar Heels in the NCAA Tournament that saw UNC return to College Cup for the first time since 2003. She scored five goals in the post season, two of which were game winners. ■ Anson Dorrance, women’s soccer Best Director The coach has led the Tar Heels to 18 of the 25 NCAA champion ships in women’s soccer history. The team took a two-year hiatus from its winning ways, but after rolling past Notre Dame 2-1 in the College Cup hosted in Cary, Dorrance and Cos. were able to celebrate once again. With such a young team, North Carolina could very well find itself champions for awhile. The nominees were countless, but you know what they say, there can only be one winner. In a rare starting appearance, Warren pitched the longest and most effective outing of his career in a 4-2 UNC victory against Gardner-Webb. He lasted six innings and struck out seven Bulldogs, giving up only one run in a speedy game that last ed less than two hours. “For the most part today, he had great command of three pitches,” assistant coach Chad Holbrook BASEBALL G-W 2 UNC 4 said of Warren’s slider, cutter and changeup. “When’s he’s got com mand of three pitches, he’s going to be successful.” Warren had pitched twice in relief this year but had not start ed. With two midweek games this week and a three-game series this weekend, he got a shot to start, with the Tar Heels only hoping for a few effective innings. Instead, Warren chewed through two-thirds of the game. “This year I really worked on conditioning hard and being in shape for when this opportunity comes around,” Warren said. He said he could tell warming up before the game that his slider would be working. “That was probably my out pitch today,” he said. A first-inning UNC scoring out burst helped him too. Reid Frank led off the bottom of the first by rocketing the first pitch he saw toward the centerfield wall. It looked like Frank had boosted UNC with a leadoff homer. Instead, the drive thumped into the navy blue outfield wall and Frank settled for a stand-up triple. “Sometimes I’ll take the first pitch but some days I’ll kinda be thinking, ‘lf this guy pipes one right down the middle, I might as well take a hack,’” Frank said. Freshman Dustin Ackley drove in Frank with a sacrifice fly and UNC made the lead 3-0 later in the inning after Tim Federowicz DTH Classifieds Help Wanted HAB TECHS: Looking for a job that fits college hours? When Benji Johnson led off UNC’s second inning with a home run for a 4-0 lead, it looked like a blowout was coming into form. But the Tar Heel bats went dead after that. They only managed three more hits and didn’t come close to an insurance run. “We need to be more consistent throughout the game, not just get out to a lead and then coast,” Frank said. Their coasting slid them into a tighter-than-expected ballgame. After Gardner-Webb scored on a sharp single in the top of the fourth, they put runners on first and third with one out. In the ninth inning, UNC’s Andrew Carignan put two run ners on base, but escaped by strik ing out a pinch-hitter and forcing a first-pitch groundout. “He gave up one solid hit and then he nickeled-and-dimed it a little bit,” Holbrook said. “But that’s to be expected in the ninth inning.
