On Wednesday, Gov. Chet Culver ordered the department to “do the common sense thing” and offer refunds to anyone affected by the “ridiculous” policy. “I don’t mind paying taxes, but let’s get real, here people,” said Bob Kautz, owner of a pumpkin patch in Buffalo, just west of Davenport. NOTED. An lowa hunter is in good condition after he was shot in the leg at close range by his dog, who stepped on his shotgun, tripping the trigger. The hunting party shot a bird, and when the man went to get it, he put his gun on the ground and crossed a fence. As he crossed the fence, his hunting dog stepped on the gun. It took veterinarians more than four hours to surgically remove the animal’s collar. Schmitz, who has a tattoo of the pig’s name, Alaina, said she cried for three days. COMMUNITY CALENDAR Bakery. POLICE LOG ■ A soldier stationed at FL Bragg was arrested after a fight at Deep End early Sunday morning, accord ing to Chapel Hill police reports. Jeremy Michael Wical, 21, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of being drunk and disruptive and assault on a law enforcement offi cer, reports state. A police officer saw Wical assault someone, reports state. When the officer told Wical to leave, he became aggressive and refused. He then fol lowed the officer up to the street, where he shoved him, reports state. Wical was secured in Orange County Jail in lieu of $15,000 bail and is scheduled to appear Nov. 26 in court, reports state. ■ A dog was found without food, water or shelter in an alley behind a building at 100 W. Rosemary St. at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, according to Chapel Hill police reports. The dog, valued at SO, was seized, reports state. iatlg (Ear BM ■ Szymon Aleksander Pucilowski, 28, of 1203 Willow Drive, was arrested at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday at his home for failure to appear in court, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Pucilowski, who is listed as a University employee, was secured in Orange County Jail in lieu of $l5O bail, pending an appearance in court in Hillsborough, reports state. ■ A man tried to steal some Miller Lite from TJ’s Beverage and Tobacco, 108 W. Franklin St., just after 6:30 p.m. Monday, accord ing to Chapel Hill police reports. The 12-pack was valued at $10.25, reports state. ■ Jermon Rasheem Jones, 18, of 1105 N.C. 54 Bypass, Unit CIO, was arrested for warrants for felony breaking and larceny, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Jones was arrested at the Chapel Hill police station at 5 pah. Monday, reports state.
