12 TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2008 Va. Tech plans renovation BY ELIZABETH DEORNELLAS STATE A NATIONAL EDITOR In nine horrific minutes, 30 stu dents and faculty members were gunned down in Norris Hall. On that bloody day last spring, Cho Seung-Hui, 23. shot two of his fellow students in a dormi tory. Two and a half hours later he opened rounds in Norris Hall before killing himself. But the building will not remain blood-stained forever. Virginia Tech has finalized plans to transform the main site of the April 16 shootings. Norris Hall will house the newly created Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention, as well as the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics. The renovation will begin in eariv 2008. At an estimated cost of $1 million, the remodeling will allow the university to reclaim a building valued in excess of S3O million. “We should facilitate student centered learning and discovery, and we believe that this is a very ISC] Tle/f aton gl WEDNESDAY Dinner .6:OOPV ,ji /?/ r//7f Hi L W9^83 " 40a - MM I * f W '***’**-* Catholic Campus BEL Ministry <^K MASSES: Sat. 15; Sun. 9am, 1 lam. Before the shooting, almost every student at Virginia Tech had at least one class in Norris Hall dur ing their time at the university. ESM Department Head lshwar Puri, who made a public presenta tion in support of the remodeling plan, said he thought it was crucial to bring traffic back to Norris Hall. “What we are trying to do is trying to bring health back into a building," he said. “Think of it like a wound ... eventually you have scars, and eventually the scars go away. This is part of the process." Puri said that his department senes 1,500 students a semester and that only two had requested not to return to Norris Hall. Despite all efforts to move on, he said the building will always be a physical reminder of tragedy. “We'd like to reconfigure the space so that we're not trauma News tized, but at the same time we don't want to forget," he said. Throughout the year, the Virginia Tech community com memorated the fallen with campus memorials, vigils and concerts. The university's Office of Recovery and Support set up to help the vic tims' families, is now refocusing its mission on healing the community . ‘This is a traumatic event of historic proportions and in a place where things like this don't hap pen." said the office's director. Jay Poole. "It’s a part of the Virginia Tech legacy now." The Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, created in response to the nationwide outpouring of dona tions. was closed Dec. 31 after col lecting more than $8.5 million. Individual funds set up to memorialize the shootings' victims are still open for donations, as is the Hokie Spirit Scholarship Fund. Contact the State O National Editor at stntdesk(a'unc.edu.
