®ir Mil ear Hrrl RON PAUL FROM PAGE 1 Hard knocks in Charleston Paul s message of personal free dom by way of federal deregulation kept his young volunteers traipsing through suburbia, knocking on the doors of those who were variously uninformed, apathetic or unrecep tive. “If you can just talk to people for a few minutes, getting people to know where you're coming from, it's worth it," Michael-Shetlev said after leaving campaign literature on the doorknob, as was protocol for voters who didn't answer the door. "Most people don’t answer their doors," he explained, looking deject ed but not defeated. “I’d rather talk to people face to face —that's how elections are won* One man leaned haphazardly against his door frame, eagle tattoo exposed, expressing disinterest He refused the literature. Some didn't open their storm doors, uttering curt “no, thank yous" through the glass. “He kind of scares me," was local business owner Brian Mills' assess ment of Paul, whom he termed “wacky" based on Paul's perfor mance in the Fox News debate. Michael-Shetlev said such a reaction was the result of voters who were unaccustomed to hearing ideas as radical as those of Paul. "It's frustrating," he said as he left Mills' driveway. “Most people have never encountered these ideas." Paul advocates extreme limits on the federal government. He cham pions the idea that giving power to the states grants personal freedom to individual citizens. “Democrats are sometimes more open to the message," said Adam Spivey, a volunteer from nearby West Ashley. S.C. “Most Democrats are concerned about civil liberties and ending the war." The canvassers tried to hammer home Paul's anti-war sentiments to any voters who seemed to lean left. One woman declared her inten tion to vote for Barack Obama or CAMPUS FROM PAGE 1 sequence these projects will real ize," Evans said. One project the University is prioritizing is the relocation of the UNC School of Law to the Carolina North campus, which Moeser said is “very close to being a decided matter." “This is not idle talk on our part," Moeser said. “We’re real ly quite serious about moving ahead. We want to expand the law school.” Perry said that it w ould be “irre sponsible" for the University to construct anywhere else on the property, as the 750 remaining acres are largely undeveloped, but that the rest of the plans are open to change. “Beyond that, there is flexibility," he said. “1 don't think anything is 100 percent cast in stone.” Contact the City Editor at citydesk@unc.edu. ahr flatly (Tar Hrrl Help Wanted Phi Mu Waiters Needed Lunch & Dinner 5 times/week $6.15 /hr + Free Meals Provided Positions Available Immediately Call Howard Brubaker 962-3756 NOW HIRING Exciting Opportunities in the restaurant industry. Phone banking for Paul After canvassing. 30 to 40 vol unteers returned to headquarters. Volunteers from North Carolina. Kansas, New York and New Jersey devoted their evenings to calling hundreds of Republican and inde pendent voters. At the end of the day, spirits were up despite minimal results. UNC sophomore Steven Kwon said many voters hung up once the volunteers identified themselves. “I got a lot of‘no's,"’ he said. “It wasn't a lot of success; canvassing was a lot better.” But Kwon said UNC freshman Colin Smith did find some success in the often-frustrating process of cold-calling voters. “Colin kept getting into 20- minute conversations, and he was very successful, I think," Kwon said. “(Smith) got three supporters in a row he must have hit gold." Outside headquarters, Smith also seemed to strike a chord with the voters. “1 really enjoyed talking to all of Take 15/501 South towards Pittsboro Eait Market St. / Southern Village THE BUCKET LIST fa) - -..1 2-80-2:45 500-710*35 IN THE NAME OF THE KING 1 30419720960 (UIKMTREASUREIft4IO7ttft4S CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR > ...nwamSM) THE GOLDEN COMPASS Hi _i*4 PS, I LOVE YOU Bl 705-9:45 SUtUftMwl/n/M-ff DRESSES BEBEgaguaLria-BMi-ii *O-00 ID I O I T t| SEATiWc Help Wanted Place a Classified: www.dallytarheel.com/classifieds or Call 919-962-0252 From Page One them," Smith said of the day’s can vassing. “I talked to 60 people, and I may have convinced four." Pursuing happiness Volunteers said Paul embodies the kind of change that the country needs, a return to the old Republican values of Thomas Jefferson. “Ron Paul is giving this country a reawakening to what its founding ideas were," Michael-Shetley said. Paul advocates the elimination of government subsidies to big businesses in the belief that doing so will level the playing field and allow small businesses to be suc cessful. Paul’s support for economic deregulation goes hand-in-hand with his opposition to government sponsored morality. “He defends people’s rights to do what they want to do," said TVler De Friess, a student at Kansas University. Paul's strict constitutionalism reinforces his support for placing personal liberties above all else. “My main thing is the Constitution," Harris said. “It’s good to have someone who actu ally reads the thing.” Contact the State (St National Editor at stntdesk@unc.edu.
