CAROLINA UNIONjgI H Dose Mississippi lawmakers try to trim fat FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS Three Mississippi legislators have introduced a bill that would make it illegal for restaurants to serve obese customers, USA Today reported. “Any food establishment to which this section applies shall not be allowed to serve food to any person who is obese,” the bill reads in part. The State Department of Health would be responsible for determining the obesity benchmark and for enforcing the law. Under the proposal, health inspectors would be allowed to take away the permit from any restaurant that repeatedly feeds extremely overweight customers. About two-thirds of Mississippians are overweight or obese, according to a recent analysis of federal health data. NOTED. A New Jersey State Police employee is accused of sneaking into a church to look at pornography on a nun’s computer. Police said Thomas G. Findler had been repeatedly sneaking into Grace St. Paul Episcopal Church in the night over the last three weeks. A church custodian found Findler, who worships at the church, with pom on a nun’s computer. Findler was charged with burglary and theft. Rosemary St., was arrested on a felony charge of crack cocaine possession and a misdemeanor charge of drug paraphernalia pos session at 8:48 p.m. Friday at 300 W. Lassiter was released on $5,000 unsecured bail and is scheduled to appear Tuesday in the court of first appearance in Chapel Hill, accord ing to reports. ■ Ernest “Bobo" Bynum, 48, of 501 Eugene St., Carrboro, was arrested for a probation viola tion Friday evening at Nunn and Whitaker streets, according to Chapel Hill police reports. He was taken to Orange County- Jail without bail, pending a date in District Criminal Court in Hillsborough today, reports state. ■ Alan Joseph Moore, a 22- year-old soldier from Ft. Expert tips: applying to graduate As seniors are counting down their last 97 days in school, they are entering crunch time for graduation require ments. Amid plans for internships, jobs, graduate school and living situations, graduating seniors need to remember to apply to graduate to be sure they get to their post-college plans. So before donning their caps and gowns, seniors should heed these tips from academic advising: ■ Apply early. Friday is the deadline for students in the College of Arts and Sciences. Failure to turn in your applica tion could result in probleips with your graduation. ■ Remember your course numbers. The hardest part of the application is listing and remembering all of your course numbers, advisers say. ■ Take care of transfer credits.
