Shr Daily (Tar Hrrl MANAGER FROM PAGE 1 bedroom house," Frasor said. “I’d always be like, ‘Aw, let’s not live with Preston,’just to get under his skin because he would get so heated about it" Stories vary on how the four some formed. Puckett said he and Ginyard were planning to live together and so were Frasor and Hansbrough, so they just naturally grouped together. But according to Ginyard, “The idea of him coming in just kinda snuck in there; next thing we were all four living together." Still, deciding to live together was the simple part. Actually shar ing the living space proved to be a little bit tougher. “Bobby was like, ‘l’ve done it, and you’re not ready to share a bath room with TVler," Puckett said. “He does weird stuff, so you gotta be ready for that." Finding his way Four-and-a-half years ago, there was not a single familiar face. Puckett arrived on campus in June 0f2003. He had just made the long trip from Boulder, Colo., and he didn't know anyone at UNC. But he already had a foot in the door. Puckett worked the Tar Heels' basketball camp the summer before his freshman year, and he had met Roy Williams years earlier. Williams' first year as North Carolina's coach was Puckett's first year on campus, and the new coaching staff wanted to hire all new managers. Just like that, while still green behind the ears, Puckett found himself a varsity manager. “1 had friends who went to other schools and played football in col lege, and it wasn't exactly the cool thing to be the basketball manager." he said. “Especially being from Colorado, to call home and say, ‘Hey, I'm a manager for the North Carolina basketball team,' it didn't exactly blow anybody away." But he was already on the fast track. Because he started as a varsity manager, Puckett bypassed the typical two to three years spent as a JV manager before earning a promotion. Last year, he assumed the reins as head manager from David Hoots and took a page out of the Roy Williams management book to cnjft his mvn leadership style. “\yithlpsstaff, he has things lined up ftr thWn, like, ‘Here’s where you're responsible; here’s where you're responsible," Puckett said. “I kind of tried to do that same thing with the managers." He’s enjoyed the job so much that he decided to stick around for an extra year. "Anywhere else, I wouldn't have taken the job, done some thing else. But it just kinda was a good fit." The facts of life Just weeks ago, Williams was on his way to the house. The head coach had yet to visit Puckett, Frasor, Ginyard and Hansbrough's house off East Franklin Street But after Frasor underwent sur gery to repair a tom ACL, Williams made a house call. “He calls on his way, and he’s like. Alright, you have 10 minutes to clean up everything and get rid of the beer cans,' and everybody was like, ‘Ha ha," Frasor said. “But as soon as he hung up, Preston is running in the base ment and getting everything off the walls." Frasor was immobile in bed, and Ginyard was gone. Fortunately for the teammates, the house already had been cleaned with the help of Frasor's parents, who were in town after the surgery, and Frasor's dad helped Puckett pick up the rest of the mess. Hansbrough, panicking, had a different reaction. “TVler went straight to his room to make sure his room was clean," Frasor said, grinning at the mem ory. “Even though coach wouldn't care if his room was clean." By the time Williams arrived, the place managed to look trim and tidy. The roommates escaped endless mockery. “As coach said on his visit," Puckett said, “he saw our house on a pretty good day." Family feud BOYZ II MEN FROM PAGE 1 Carolina Union President Robert Gurdian. who has worked on the event, said he thinks the concert is reasonably priced. For Marshall, though, getting Boyz II Men was about more than cost or student appeal. “We wanted to get a group that we re all embarrassed to love now," she said. “We want to hear the kind of song that we had our first kiss to, or had our first slow dance to." Walking into the Smith Center his freshman year, he brushed shoulders with Sean May. Raymond Felton and Rashad McCants. Now, he turns on ESPN and sees his roommates. He does laundry with the team's veteran leaders. He eats breakfast with a potential Player of the Year. And it seems normal. “People come up to me and are like, ‘Man, do you appreci ate that?" Puckett said. “And I’m like, ‘No, I don’t appreciate that; they’re idiots. Do I appreciate it that I hear (TVler’s) protein shake blender?" Actually, to hear him say it, liv ing with Hansbrough. Frasor and Ginyard isn’t a privilege it’s a disaster waiting to happen. “As soon as the team knew we were moving in, they were like, ‘Preston and Bobby are going to argue all the time," Puckett said. They were right. “We tease Preston the most, obviously," Frasor said. NO RUNOFF FROM PAGE l SlO for Student Congress. Although students are given extra time and money for a runoff. Brewer said that candidates gener ally plan runoff strategies. “Everybody plans for a runoff when you have more than two can didates," Brewer said. “It would be absolutely ill-advised to not take that into account when planning." But former candidates said run off time can be both a blessing and a hindrance. “On the one hand, it gave me one less week of mentorship," said Eve Carson, current student body presi dent. “But it gave me this opportu nity to tell everyone again ... why it was that l wanted to run for them." Allred noted that having a run off puts the president one week behind, preventing him or her from appointing a Cabinet. And then the next day everybody's all happy and playing ‘Rock Band." “We’ve got a wide range of moods that go on at the house. You never know," he said. And though he puts in long hours at work and then runs the risk of tripping over Hansbrough's muscle shirts at home, it has all been worth it for Puckett. “To me, it’s like it couldn't have worked out any better." Allred mentioned Raynor's orga nization as an aid, especially in get ting students to vote. This year, there were 6.625 bal lots cast, compared to last year's record-setting turnout of 7,241. The votes were split with 3.267 going to Raynor, 1.601 to Logan Liles and 1,403 to Kristin Hill. “It definitely shows that the stu dent body thought JJ. Raynor w as a great choice for student body presi dent just judging from her campaign and not taking anything away from anyone else." Capriglione said, add ing that Raynor approached him in the fall to find out what she could and could not do during elections. “Just from that (early meeting) and seeing what she did through out the entire campaign, she obvi ously was trying to show students that she was the most qualified."
