Foy said Chapel Hill took a pro active approach after 2002, when Cane Creek Reservoir water levels fell below full for the first spring since it was filled in 1989. But the conservation efforts may not be enough without more drastic restrictions. STATE FROM PAGE 1 ers to look for all night. ‘lt makes (my job) a lot easier,’ he said. “Wayne is our sharpshooter. UnraOi.r -18 700 From Page One In a presentation to the Community Leadership Council, Sydney Miller, Triangle J Council of Governments water resources planning manager, predicted the drought won’t end soon. ‘lf, over the next three-month period, we had 13 to 16 inches of rain, it would not end the drought, but it would ameliorate it," Miller said, adding there is only a 15 to 20 percent chance of that happening. OWASA Executive Director Ed Kerwin said Cane Creek Reservoir, OWASAs primary' water source, got 28.22 inches of rainfall in 200" Since 1991, it’s received 43.51 inch- great player, and Tyler, there’s really no word for him. He does what he does, he’s a beast when he’s down there, and it makes it a lot easier." But while UNC had to feel good after another surprising blowout despite being ravaged by injuries TV Lawson did not play for the fifth straight game and Deon Thompson sat out the second half N.C. State was left to ponder a fourth-straight conference loss. “It’s about concentration, focus and being tough. We knew that in the sec ond half their team would come out and be more physical," NCSU coach Sidney Lowe said. “We can’t keep up. and it ’s puzzling to me" Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu. Kerwin said water usage, while lower in December, increased in January before decreasing as of Feb. 1. Carrboro Mayor Mark Chilton said Carrboro residents are doing what they can to conserve. “I think people understand it’s a serious situation we’re facing, and lots of people in Carrboro are trying to implement conservation measures in their homes, which I think is really good," Chilton said. But he said that OWASA is most effective at enforcing conservation and that they should vote to move into Stage 3 restrictions. He said the reservoirs aren’t filling up at a rate that allows for optimism, and more serious conservation should start now rather than later. “1 think Stage 3 is what needs to happen it’s not raining nearly enough." THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2008 INDEMNITY FROM PAGE 1 Perucci said ‘Double Indemnity’s" heroes are "not like (noir pioneer) Raymond Chandler's heroes the masculine savior." And once Neff falls in love with housewife Dietrichson, they plan an insurance-scam murder, which risks everything. Jarman, who plays the most hap less of the Neffs, said he believes the gender roles in film noir come from a reaction to “the new roles that women moved into in World War II." which he attributed to a misogy nistic tendency in many noirs. “Men are essentially helpless," Jarman said. Dietrichson exemplifies the femme fatale archetype, particular ly the persona played by sophomore Maria Facelli. Facelli also plays Phyllis’ daughter, Lola Dietrichson. who becomes a pivotal character after a shocking tum of events. The black-and-white set features oversized stock market charts, put ting the actors in a stylized environ ment. Stark lighting pervades the play, and a movie screen sits in the middle of the stage, showing pieces of the film and original footage. “Film noirs roots lie in German r£rp^£sz'}<rns^: • Tobacco Accessories • Professional Body Piercing • Handblown Glass & Jewelry • Romantic & Marital Aids * Videos DVDs Games (919)967-3666 137 East Franklin St 8106 • Chapet Kill NC 2751 L • Carolina Sports GYMNASTICS Fri. 2/22 vs. Florida at 7pm Win a Mongoose Mountain Blka! Traditionally, film noir uses light ing more expressively than other genres, and Durbin said she was able to play with those aspects and use them to good effect Despite faithful 1940s costumes, the production does not restrict itself to Roosevelt-era culture. While some of the movie's score is present The Velvet Underground's ‘Femme Fatale" makes an appearance, as does a Jimi Hendrix cover. “We live in a noir era," Perucci said, explaining that he sees the genre surviving best today with directors such as Joel and Ethan Coen, who directed 2007's “No Country for Old Men." “The Coen brothers are in the James M. Cain mold, where the protagonist is corrupted, weak and even a bit of a loser," he said. Contact the Arts Editor at artsdesk@unc.edu. 5
