President Bush
endorses McCain
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -
John McCain got a White House
embrace from President Bush
on Wednesday, along with the
party perks that go with sewing
up the Republican nomination.
The endorsement has baggage,
though, reminding voters of
the drawn-out Iraq war and the
nation s economic woes.
Bush's speech held special
resonance as the president who
ordered the Iraq invasion five
years ago stood outside the White
House alongside one of the wars
most resolute supporters.
Kucinich back in
Ohio senate race
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)
Dennis Kucinich. the liberal
Ohio politician who has made two
failed White House bids, won the
Democratic primary Tuesday in a
battle against the toughest, best
financed challenger in his 12-year
congressional career.
The presidential race drew the
most press coverage, Kucinich's
race was the best-known senate
contest in Ohio and Texas.
Kucinich dropped out of the
presidential race on Jan. 25,
months earlier than he did in
2004.

BAGHDAD (AP) - The Iraqi

NEW HAVEN. Conn. (AP)
A former Navy sailor has been
convicted of leaking details about
his own ship’s movements to sus

Jurors were in their second

convicted Hassan Abu-Jihaad

Federal prosecutors said the

down the sink in the '7os because
it wasn't safe," said Rodney Swiney,
WRScompass' site project manager.
Groundwater cleanup began in
2006 and is expected to continue
for the next 20 to 30 years until it
reaches state standards. Daw said.
The cleanup efforts will not inter
fere with UNC's immediate construc
tion plans for Carolina North, which
will begin in 2009 at the earliest.
Future construction on the site
could be limited. Daw said, because
waste might have seeped into the
water table beyond the area that
will be cleaned. That would not
allow buildings with basements to
be constructed on the site but would
allow for surface construction such
as parking lots.

UNC golf teams find success
BY ANNA KIM
STAFF WRITER
North Carolina's men’s and
women's golf teams this week went
as far and wide as San Jose, Calif.,
and Tallahassee, Fla But both trips
brought home encouraging finishes
for the Tar Heels.
The men traveled for their first
match of the spring season to the
Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted
by Golden Eagle Country Club.
The intercollegiate concluded
Monday with the final two rounds
because of Tuesday’s inclement
weather.
But freshman Kevin O’Connell
packed in more than enough
highlights for Monday's match.
O’Connell's outstanding second
round performance included six
birdies and no bogies, carding a
six-under 66.
In the third round, he rounded
out his performance, posting an
even-par 72 to secure a third-place
tie on the individual leaderboard in
just his fifth tournament of his col
lege career.
“He’s one of the best players
in college golf," UNC coach John
Inman said. “And he's had a chance
to w in a few of the tournaments,
and I think that time is coming for
him."

Austin cited the team's inability
to consistently shoot par for what
she believed was a weaker per

by improvements in the golfers'
performances.
“I really feel like were right on

Junior Sydney Crane anchored
the Tar Heels, firing a one-over 73

After having suffered a wrist

“Sydney is maturing and grow -
