ahr flaiiy ear Hrrl UNC trying to train more science teachers Biology, physics majors gain option BY MEGHAN E. WOODS STAfF WRITER Entering the education field after graduation soon will become easier for biology and physics majors. In fall 2008 the University plans to launch the UNC Baccalaureate Education in Science and Teaching, or UNC BEST, a program that will allow students majoring in biology and physics to earn an N.C. teaching license while completing their undergraduate degree. "We don't have as many teach ers qualified to teach sciences at the secondary level," said Steve Matson, chairman of the biology department. “We want to increase the num bers of science teachers in high schools who have bachelor's degrees in the area they’re teaching." North Carolina's public schools need about 525 science teach ers each year, but UNC-system schools produced only about 200 science teachers in the 2006-07 school year meeting less than half of the state's need. “Science and math are areas that are always deemed areas of shortage for us," said Stephanie Knott, the spokeswoman for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. “A lot of people find science intimidating, and that is often not an area that colleges graduate many certified teachers in." The demand for science teach ers is so high that the district pays Ttin I * 620 Market St. Ijlllllllil Take 15/501 South towards htttboro Exit Marhot St / Southern Village LEATHERHEADS __ J2:2:4W:0M:M45 MllfS ISLAND £ 12:45-25W55-7.(M15 HORTON HEMS A WHO s ...mmmm w 21 L 1204007:109:45 SUPERHERO MOVIES m ikiw isss Stall I/11/ll • ONKNPCIES Of NIHWML WINCE CASPIAN K shf Batig oar Hfri Help Wanted CARRBORO RECREATION AND PARKS (Program Division) Part-time, temporary Youth baseball umpires needed March thru June lor games played M-F evenings and Saturday days for ages 6-1S years-old Umputog experience and/or base ball knowledge preferred. 4-10 games per week Pay rate 514.50-522 .SPgame Adult Softball Of fioah needed March thru June lor games played Tu/Th evenings Experience and/or sound softball knowledge preferred. 2-6 games per week Pay rate $19.50-521.50/game Facility and Activity Supervisors needed March thru June. 6 24/hrv wk Week day. evening and weekend hours Assist with special events, general and athietK programs Recreational program experience and knowledge preferred Pay rate 594* All post born are open until fitted, flexible scheduling For addmonai tofo on any of the above pos* bom. call 918-7364 for an application contact Human Resources. 301 West Mam Street. The UNC-BEST program is a collaborative effort between the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences. Students interested in the program must apply by May 1. In addition to the required class es for their major, students also can take three classes within the Schrxil of Education. Interested students can complete the student teaching requirement in the spring of their senior year or after graduation through a postgraduation pro gram at the School of Education, said Laurie McNeil, chairwoman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Before UNC-BEST was created or formulated, all UNC science majors had to pursue another degree after graduation to fulfill the requirements for North Carolina’s teaching license. Deborah Eaker-Rich, interim associate dean of the School of Education, said this additional period of training probably dis couraged students from entering the field. “Many students don't want to do that, for both financial and psycho logical reasons." fCEGAL CINEMAS SHOWS IN * *.< TIMBERLYNE 6 933-8600 weaver Da f y at Airport Rd MfrfMQANGQ 1711 Ad* Tim on Sob CHRONICLES Of NARNIA PRINCE CASPIAN (PC) * LEATHERHEADS (PG-13) (150430) 710 950 MIMS ISLAND (PG)* (135405)720 940 THE RUINS (R) •ID REO 0 i 155 4251730 1000 21 (PC-13) (130415)700 945 HORTON HEARS A WHO (G) i 145 420) 705 935 THE SUPER HERO MOVIE (PC-13) 1140 410)725 955 mmmmmmmmm —i Homes for Sale NEW TOWNHOMES MINUTES FROM UNC 5174.000-SI 79.900 2-3 BR units with 1 car garage Brick and vmyl sxkng. stainless steel appliances, large closets, patio with all wooded views low HOA dues Walk to shops, gym and restaurants Quarter mile from Park and Ride Builder offering 54.Q00 for closing costs!
