Offbeat jobs available at UNC
BY ZACK LEVINE
STATE WRITER
UNC’s Campus Recreation
department is one of the largest
in the nation, and it employs more
than 500 students each year.
Campus Recreation Director
Marty Pomerantz said the depart
ment is so large because intramural
sports need supervisors and officiat
ing staff throughout the school year.
“Most hires take place in the
spring so that we can make sure we
are fully staffed for the next year,"
he said. “Sometimes people will
drop out, and there will be open
ings during the year, especially for
officials in intramurals."
Campus Recreation is one of sev
eral departments throughout cam
pus that provide specialized jobs for
students. Mast non-work-study jobs
on campus pay minimum wage, and
there sue about 1,000 students usu
ally employed through work-study
at UNC.
Jobs such as receptionists, weight
room supervisors, fitness instructors
and persona] trainers are also avail
able through Campus Recreation.
Additional positions include
climbing-wall monitors, who super
vise the two climbing walls and help
students learn to climb properly.
Beyond Campus Recreation,
there are other jobs available on
campus that often meet students’
specific interests.
Multimedia center
Will Bosley, the manager of
the Beasley Multimedia Resource
Center, said work-study students
interested in multimedia supervise
the lab and assist students.
He said there occasionally arc
openings, but the Beasley Center
is a job opportunity of which few
people are aware.
“We are located in the basement
of Graham Memorial," Bosley said.
“Not a lot of people know we exist’

working in Coker Arboretum. The
job description focuses on routine
maintenance, including path raking,
weeding, pruning and planting.
“We offer half a dozen jobs

Arboretum Curator Dan Stem
said.
Computer programming
The UNC General Alumni
Association also offers a little
known paid internship to a com
puter science major with some pro
gramming experience to help with
W’eb site design and upkeep.
They are currently looking for
someone to fill the position for
summer and fall, said Dave Drake,
online coordinator.
“Wc go under the radar because
we only have one position and
it’s only advertised once a year at
most," he said.
