Hill Alumni Center Free & Open to All PRESENTED BY UNC s Center for the Study of the American South WITH SUPPORT FROM THE UNC General Alumni Association Kenan readies for expansion Stadium to add seating on east side BY SETH WRIGHT STAFF WRITER Since its construction in 1927. Kenan Stadium has had one major addition in 1963 that doubled the seating capacity. Several smaller additions, the most recent in 1998, brought the stadium to its current capacity of 60,000. Kenan stadium was left a horseshoe. But after another renovation, football game attendees walking to their seats in Kenan Stadium will be able to make a full circle. Long-range plans, formulated by the Department of Athletics and the Facilities Planning and Construction department, include filling out the east end zone of Kenan Stadium. Plans also include an addition of a second-level concourse, anew academic support center for stu dent athletes and a refurbishing of the stadiums surrounding forest. “We've been proud to say it’s the most beautiful stadium in the country," UNC Athletic Director Dick Baddour said. “What we’ve done is come up with a plan that's going to enhance that." The completion of the project will add more premium seating to the stadium's current 60,000 capacity. Premium seating is any private suite or special club seat. But according to the NCAA, in 2006 average game attendance at Kenan Stadium was just below 50,000, meaning that 10,000 seats were usually left vacant at each game. The new addition will also mean an increase in ticket prices, though officials have not decided how much more the prices will rise. According to TarHeelßlue.com, ticket prices are $315 for the entire 2008 sea son. Baddour said the Kenan Stadium improvements will be paid for with the sale of premium seating, fund raising and anew facility fee added to the cost of each ticket. The new multistep project is going to be completed in phases, with each phase beginning as the athletics department receives funding. And although the master plan will be set into action beginning next year, the renovations will take several years to complete. “How rapidly we go from there will be dictated by our ability to raise funds and the interest level in the program," Baddour said. “I can see it easily as a five-, six-, seven-, eight-year project." Funds will first lx- used to elimi nate clutter in the west end zone stu dent entrance. Instead of havingjust the lower-level concourse, a second level will be added and will include bathrooms and concessions. But although the stadium will be made more accessible for attend ees, the best part of the project, Baddour said, is that student ath letes will have more than double the amount of study space they now have at the Kenan Field House. The new academic support cen ter for student athletes is expected to be about 40,000 square feet. “ Hozc l rapidly we go from there will be dictated by our ability to raise funds and the interest level in the program." DICK BADDOUR, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS The area now is about 15,000 square feet “Since the building was first built, our teams have expanded, our programming has expanded and our staff has expanded," said Robert Mercer, director of aca demic support for student athletes. “We need a unit to house all of that activity." Along with student athletes, plans show that the forest surrounding the stadium will receive attention. “There’s a lot of foot traffic through the area. Over many years, that compacts the soil," said Jill Coleman, a landscape architect in facilities planning. “I think we have Now a horseshoe, soon a FISHBOWL Kenan Stadium is getting a face-lift.
