and providing basic human rights
for people who can’t otherwise get
health care." SHAC Co-Director
Lindsey Bach said.
And in recent years. SHAC has
received heightened interest for its
free HIV testing.
“We have the highest positive
HIV rate of anywhere else in the
state," Co-Director Brian Zeithaml
said. "This means that we are
reaching the population that needs
to be tested and the population
that otherwise may not get tested
because they trust us."
And SHAC is more than just a
free clinic. It has five other branches
that work with community groups.

Torch relay called
‘crisis’ by leaders
BEIJING (AP) - The pro
test-marred Olympic torch relay
and international criticism of
China’s policies on Tibet, Darfur
and human rights have turned
the Beijing Games into one of the
most politically charged in recent
history, presenting the IOC with
one of its toughest tests since the
boycott era of the 1970 sand ‘Bos.
“It is a crisis, there is no doubt
about that" IOC President Jacques
Rogge said. "But the IOC has
weathered many bigger storms."
Earlier in the week. IOC offi
cials contemplated possibly short
ening the relay, but Rogge said
Thursday that was not an option.
“The beautiful thing about
working with SHAC is that every
body who works here are just
pieces of the puzzle," Zeithaml
said. “Everybody who works here
believes in SHAC."

FLACK
FROM PAGE 1
Heels aim to pick up three more
of those wins as North Carolina
travels for an ACC series against
the Tigers.
Just win, baby
It might be hard to believe some
one just 39 hits shy of a major record
would be clueless of the situation.
But that’s how it’s always been
for Flack. Individual accolades
were never really important, even
going back to his T-ball days, not
necessarily his favorite baseball
moments.
Flack will tell you he didn’t like
the sport because hitting off the tee
wasn't any fun.
“I hated when I had to hit off the
tee. I couldn’t stand it," Flack said. “I
had to make my dad pitch to me."
But there was a more important
reason why the 5-year-old Flack
wasn't a fan of tee-ball.
“No. 1, he wanted to keep
score," Flack’s father, Tripp,
recalled. “He’s always been very
competitive."
Even today. Flack has the same
attitude, caring far more about
what is on the scoreboard than
what is by his name in the boxscore.
After passing the record in a UNC
loss, he said that he was "glad to get
it" but that he would have willingly

campaign season seems to have a
special feel to it.
“I’ve seen people take their own
special initiative."
Students for Obama organizer
Kate Thompson said the group’s
voter registration efforts are in the
best interest of the campaign.
“Young people go overwhelm
ingly for Obama," she said. “It’s
statistical."
Stover admitted what success
the group has seen in voter regis
tration likely has been because of
its persistence and übiquity.
“For every person who’s said.
'You've asked me 10 times,’ there's
7 hated when I had
to hit off the tee. I
couldn't stand it.
I had to make my
dad pitch to me.”
CHAD FLACK, UNC THIRD BASEMAN
traded the record for the win.
Chicks dig the long ball
In high school his competitive
nature, and perhaps those early
pitches from his father, helped
Flack become one of the best power
hitters in North Carolina history.
Asa senior at East Rutherford
High School. Flack belted 19 home
runs, earning a spot on the Izmisville
Slugger All-America Team and
bringing his career total to an all
time NCHSAA best +4 home runs.
At UNC Flack’s power hasn't
dissipated.
He was an integral part of the
team the past two seasons, w ith
UNC reaching back-to-back Men's
College World Series Finals.
“That's one of the reasons he came
to Carolina. He thought he had an
opportunity to go to the College
World Series." Tripp said. “And he
thought he might be able to make a
difference and make that happen."
He surelv has made a difference.
someone who was out of the loop."
said Katherine Wolfenden. an
intern with Students for Obama.
To ramp up voter registration,
the Obama campaign organized
the Carolina Change Challenge
this week, a competition that will
reward the top five high school and
top 10 college registration volun
teers with a face-to-face meeting
with Obama himself.
The group will be holding a rally
next Thursday —the first day of
one-stop voting on the lawn of
the Morehead Planetarium. They
will provide a breakfast and a cap
pella entertainment.

“Tie
With five home runs this season.
Flack has brought his career total
to +O. good for a tie for third in the
UNC record books. His 193 career
RBIs and 479 career total bases
also sit third in Tar Heel history.
Singles, homers, who cares?
While the power numbers sep
arate Flack from Prosser the
5-foot-8, 155-pound Prosser was
pegged by UNC coach Mike Fox as
a “singles machine" Flack said
that doesn't matter.
“To tell you the truth, it’s just hit
ting a baseball.'
And while extra-base hits have
highlighted Flack's career the
same way singles made their mark
on Prosser’s the two share a
couple of important qualities that
allowed them to reach the hits
record.
“Both of them were extremely
durable and know how to play
through pain and aches," Fox said.
“You have to get in the batter s box
a 10t... to get 291-plus hits."
Not only did they play almost
every day. Neither went through
prolonged slumps, something Fox
attributed to a great work ethic and
the ability to handle failure effec
tively.
“That takes mental toughness."
he said. “And you can't let the lack
of hitting get to you."
