dhr Sally Oar 3rd Summers at home lead to rest, cash Jobs often send students back home BY GREG SMITH STAFF WRITER Although it might seem as though almost every UNC student will be traveling the globe and saving the world this summer, some students are finding that their best option is returning to their hometown. “The number one reason I’m going back home is that I want to make money." said junior I .aura ... m M PHB BrtMH r\ mmammmg t &*■ .*•.• -.m Castrodale, who is from Concord. “I thought about doing World Camp, but for that, you have to spend two grand, whereas if I get the job at the YMCA day camps. I’ll be making two grand." Castrodale, an education major, said she was excited to gain experi ence working with kids. “I also like being able to live for free at my parents' house," Summer on the Hill Castrodale said. “And not having to worn- about anything related to school and relaxing without feel ing guilty." Freshman Lesley Mcßride of Mocksville said she is going home to look for a job. “I work in retail over winter break, so hopefully 1 can get a job in that rather than work in a res taurant," she said. Some students are returning home to focus on more than work. Junior Cara Ray from Boone is a transfer student from Wake Forest University and said she was home sick for her friends and family. “I didn't really consider any other plans for the summer," Ray said. “I’m going to do volunteering at a hospital, maybe take a class at Appalachian and maybe work, too, but mostly I’m just counting TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 2008 down the days until I can see the mountains again." Freshman Charlotte native Austin Monroe said he considered multiple summer plans, including a trip to London, but said he wait ed too long to do any of them. “I will be traveling around the country to various music festivals, that's the one really good thing about the summer," Monroe said. “I'm excited. I’ll have so much free time to do things, and that's what summer’s for." 9
