Shr Sally fcir Hrrl A few more vie for RHA spot BY ELISABETH GILBERT STAFF WRITER Community governor candi dates are up for election today, but almost half the communities are not expected to see a race. Of the 15 on-campus residence hall communities, just eight have more than one candidate vying for the office. Candidates in three communi ties Cobb, Manning East and Morrison are running uncontest ed, while three other communities Craige, Ehringhaus and Manning West received no applicants. Carmichael Residence Hall, which was closed this year, will hold a special election for governor in the fall along with Whitehead. Any unfilled positions also will be decided in that election. Despite the low count of races, the numbers have improved since last year: Eight of the 13 positions Sudoku • • gcUIICS By The Mepham Group VSaX f 2008 The Mepham Group Distributed by Tnbune Media Services AH rights reserved imi nasE Complete the grid , so each row, column 4 1 c q and 3-by-3 box (in • D O bold borders) con r- t . Residence Hall Association President Michael Miller said he sees the turnout as a sign of increased awareness of RHA. “I think it’s evident in the increased interest in the governor elections and a much better turn out in getting candidates in every community." Candidates had one week to campaign before today’s election, which will take place online from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at rha.unc.edu. Although candidates can run for the office only in the community in which they will live next year, resi dents must vote in the community in which they currently live. Miller said this can pose a prob lem for potential candidates. Some students especially rising sopho mores did not know at the time of the deadline where they would live next year, which shuts out pos sible applicants. Elections will take place in all communities so that write-in can didates can run. Incoming community governors will take office formally at the start of the fall semester. One student organization is try ing to change these habits. Healthy Heels, a club that junior Amanda Velazquez started last semester, is teaching students how to cook interesting, affordable and healthy meals in the cramped quarters of a dorm kitchen. “We are trying to help students see that there are ways of using the limited resources they have in the dorms to make pretty easy dishes." Velazquez said. Healthy Heels is spreading recipe ideas and cooking tech niques to undergraduate students. Last week the student-run club took over the World Fare station at the Top of Lenoir to showcase three Asian infusion dishes for diners. “It was a big deal that students made those dishes,” Velazquez said. “It showed people how easy it was because we prepared them in seconds." In the demonstration, students used brown rice, soy beans and snow peas three ingredients Lenoir typically does not offer. And thanks to Velazquez’s group. Rams Head Market is now carrying more ingredients, such as canned beans, to help students who want to cook for themselves, said Jo Pelligra. brand manager for campus dining. Velazquez was inspired to start Healthy Heels after living on and off campus and noticing her fellow students’ eating habits. “I thought that living off campus would enable people to cook, but I think it got worse,’ she said. “Still today everyone is relying on what they can get on Franklin Street" Next fall, the club plans to help students change their ways even mord by offering themed cooking classes to teach students how to cre ate different dishes and flavors. These classes will be sponsored by local grocery stores, making them free to students, Velazquez said. Contact the University Editor at udesktyunc.edu.
