(Thr Baily Oar ftrrl IRON & WINE FROM PAGE 3 it's getting rowdy." Beam showed his musical ver satility as he played versions of his acoustic recordings, like “Upward over the Mountain." with a seven piece band, which expanded to nine people for the last songs. The percussion-heavy show also showcased Iron & Wine's shift in sound to an amalgam of African music, blues, reggae and Southern folk, which Beam acknowledged. “I'm one of those people that absorbs all kinds of music. I enjoy finding connections between blues music and African, Motown and jazz," Beam said. “When writing, I just kind of follow my interests and try to push myself into areas where you’re bringing something new to the table." But the performance was not devoid of Iron & Wine’s classic sound reminiscent of Beam's upbringing in Columbia S.C. “It’s impossible to deny the Southern influence," Beam said. "I definitely try to write human songs and hopefully that translates into whatever culture you are trying to talk about, but at the same time the context is usually the Southeast because it’s what I’m most familiar with." Beam's songs are also heavily visual, laden with beautiful imag er)- that could be attributed to his film-school roots at Florida State University. “I guess I absorb a lot from being trained in screenwriting," Beam said. “I mean, it’s why I was drawn to filmmaking in the first place, you know, this kind of visual style of communication." Beam's often tender and insight ful lyrics resonated well with the audience as he received a standing ovation and played an encore to the crowd. “Playing at these university shows, you get a lot of students, but you also get a lot of older people, too," Beam said. “But playing for the kids is always fun," Contact the Arts Editor at artsdesk(a)unc.edu. • |l| % 1 * v * *§> i|Jil iSn Jjrf, s Ethan NTE iixtiry Apartment Community I Conveniently located between the Triad & Triangle Directions: Take I 40/8S to University Drive 2978 Ethan Pointe Drive (exit 140 Elon College). Maynard and House both worked for the dentistry school for more than 25 years. Webster did not rule in their favor because the case relied more on circumstantial evidence than actual proof. “In employment discrimination cases, there is rarely direct evidence of illegal discrimination," Elizabeth Haddix, the attorney for Maynard and House, stated in a press release. “It's very unlikely that you’ll have a comment by management like. This group of workers are all too old to be productive.' So you must rely on circumstantial evidence." Because of the 2003 N.C. Court of Appeals ruling in the Feinstein v. UNC case, it is now more difficult for plaintiffs to prove discrimination. “When the University fails to fol low its own... policy, there is no rem edy for the employee," Haddix said. Mike McFarland, director of University communications, said no one from UNC could comment yet because the case is ongoing. Maynard said she, House and Haddix have not yet decided whether to appeal the ruling. “My concern is why the judge could find in our favor on so many of the facts and still rule against us when the... policy- wasn’t followed by the dental school," she said. If they appeal, the next decision would fall to the state personnel divi sion. But the state Supreme Court is the only body with the jurisdiction to rule in favor of the two women. Haddix said. She added that her clients are not litigious but pursued the case because they believed it was not fair for a member of management to refuse to follow the rules without consequence. House now works for the University, though with less pay and not as a dental technician. Maynard said she is not employed in the UNC system. He said one of every four alter native schools in the nation is located in North Carolina. He said that the 42 alternative schools in the state will grow- to 75 by next year and that in five years' time he expects there will be 150. “It is an unprecedented growth curve compared to anywhere in the country," he said.
