Students gathered to protest the arrival of a former North American Free Trade Agreement negotia tor who came to UNC to advise Chancellor James Moeser on the licensing of UNC apparel created by workers in sweatshops. Members of Student Action with Workers and Student Action with Farmworkers objected to the arrival of Jorge Perez-Lopez, exec utive director of the Fair Labor Association, a nonprofit organiza tion that helps prevent the spread of sweatshops. University Junior Linda Gomaa, a member of SAW, said she thinks Ferez-Lopez tends to take sides with corpora tions instead of workers. The students demand that the administration adopt the Designated Suppliers Program, an anti-sweat shop policy drafted by United Students Against Sweatshops. The DSP, which Moeser rejected in 2007, provides a list of apparel manufacturers that pay living wages and safeguard workers’ rights. “Chancellor Moeser has the power to change this by simply signing a sheet of paper." said Mirza, a mem ber of both the licensing labor code advisory committee and SAW. “Instead, for the past three years, he has stalled." she said. “He has hid den behind a corporate sham called the FI A," she added, referring to the Fair l.abor Association, a nonprofit that aims to end sweatshop labor. -pi Tyra Johnson, Women's Track & Field A 2007 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Champion as part of the UNC distance medley relay team that set an American record .. They hoisted colorful signs with slogans such as “UNC sweat-free" and ‘Even Duke signed the DSP." About 200 people were expected to attend, but only about 30 did. Social justice student leaders will talk with Moeser at the Campus Y at 1 p.m. today to urge him to adopt the DSP in a meeting arranged by Student Body President JJ. Raynor. Raynor said she was surprised when she heard Moeser had reject ed the DSP. “This doesn't sound like the chancellor I know," she said. ‘I know he is a man of principle. 1 thought that maybe both sides are not hearing each other." Raynor said she is anxious about today’s meeting, but she expects Mirza to maintain the discussion. “Students can get things done where others can’t because people trust in our ideals," she said.
