Students continue labor protests
BY ABBY FARSON
STAff WRITER
The bullhorn was broken, but
senior Salma Mina didn’t need it
Instead she addressed the 30
students gathered Tuesday in the
Pit with her fervent voice. “We are
here today because Carolina appar
el is produced in sweatshops."
Students gathered to protest the
arrival of a former North American
Free Trade Agreement negotia
tor who came to UNC to advise
Chancellor James Moeser on the
licensing of UNC apparel created
by workers in sweatshops.
Members of Student Action
with Workers and Student Action
with Farmworkers objected to the
arrival of Jorge Perez-Lopez, exec
utive director of the Fair Labor
Association, a nonprofit organiza
tion that helps prevent the spread
of sweatshops.

Junior Linda Gomaa, a member
of SAW, said she thinks Ferez-Lopez
tends to take sides with corpora
tions instead of workers.
The students demand that the
administration adopt the Designated
Suppliers Program, an anti-sweat
shop policy drafted by United
Students Against Sweatshops.
The DSP, which Moeser rejected
in 2007, provides a list of apparel
manufacturers that pay living wages
and safeguard workers’ rights.
“Chancellor Moeser has the power
to change this by simply signing a
sheet of paper." said Mirza, a mem
ber of both the licensing labor code
advisory committee and SAW.
“Instead, for the past three years,
he has stalled." she said. “He has hid
den behind a corporate sham called
the FI A," she added, referring to the
Fair l.abor Association, a nonprofit
that aims to end sweatshop labor.

JJ. RAYNOR, STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT
Moeser has said the reason he
didn't accept the DSP is because he
had too many unanswered questions
about it He noted that he was con
cerned with the way it would operate
and whether it would be effective.
Altha Cravey, professor of geog
raphy, also spoke at the event about
NAFTAs effects on workers and its
corollary to sweatshops.
“Ninety percent of these facto
ries have forced overtime unpaid
overtime." she said.
The protesters then marched
and chanted from the Pit to the

Lopez was scheduled to meet with
the licensing committee.
They hoisted colorful signs with
slogans such as “UNC sweat-free"
and ‘Even Duke signed the DSP."
About 200 people were expected
to attend, but only about 30 did.
Social justice student leaders will
talk with Moeser at the Campus Y
at 1 p.m. today to urge him to adopt
the DSP in a meeting arranged by
Student Body President JJ. Raynor.
Raynor said she was surprised
when she heard Moeser had reject
ed the DSP.
“This doesn't sound like the
chancellor I know," she said. ‘I
know he is a man of principle. 1
thought that maybe both sides are
not hearing each other."
Raynor said she is anxious about
today’s meeting, but she expects
Mirza to maintain the discussion.
“Students can get things done
where others can’t because people
trust in our ideals," she said.
