Districts change commissioner race BY EVAN ROSE STAFF WRITER The difference between an Efland farmer and a Chapel Hill banker couldn't be more clear. But many residents aren't sure if area-specific representation will be good for the counts- as a whole. Tuesday’s early voting marks the first county commis sioner race since a 2006 move to allocate seats between two INSIDE Profiles of two candidates up for the board of commissioners. PAGE 3 voting districts. Previously, all com missioners were elected at large. The board also will expand by two. Current commissioners said they hope the change will diver sify the board. Residents can simul taneously register and vote early for the May 6 N.C. primary. As of 4 p.m., 584 people had voted at the planetarium site. Chairman Barry Jacobs said he is concerned that commissioners might be more preoccupied with their districts than with the coun ty as a whole. “I’ve been told that by elected officials, former elected officials and managers," he said. Steve Yuhasz is one of four candidates competing for the seat available in district two, which represents the northern, more rural part of the county outside of the Chapel Hill-Carborro area. He thinks the redistricting will ensure representation for north ern Orange County. "Certain people in basically what is the O.C. school district area have felt that they didn’t have a voice,’ he said. “The district tw-o residents vote early,’ Raynor said, adding that you never know what could stop someone from voting on primary day. *l don’t think you should waste a vote." Outside the planetarium Students for Barack Obama gave voters cookies and blue balloons. Members of Heels for Hillary and supporters of Hampton Dellinger for lieutenant governor also came to campaign. No announcement on NBA futures BY DAVID ELY SPORTS EDITOR On a night meant for laughter and fon. fans of the North Carolina men's basketball team had to be reminded of such during the mid dle of UNC’s annual end-of-year awards ceremony Thursday night at the Smith Center. “This is a night about cel ebration," assistant coach Steve Robinson pleaded to a group of forlorn-looking Tar Heel fans. He went on to tell the attend ees about his days at Florida State, where people would “cut some arms and legs off to have a 36-win season" just to lighten up the mood. But who could blame the UNC faithful for being a little anxious during all the festivities, what with the black cloud of the NBA hanging above the heads ofWayne Ellington. TVler Hansbrough and TV Lawson. And for those hoping for a repeat of last season's banquet in which Hansbrough and Lawson announced their returns to Chapel Hill, mum was the word Thursday. Carson warrants still are sealed BY MAX ROSE ASSISTANT CITY EDITOR Six search warrants and affida vits related to the shooting death of Eve Carson remain sealed at the request of Chapel Hill police. Police Chief Brian Curran con firmed Thursday that Superior Court Judge Carl Fox ordered the contents kept from public record. The documents include search warrants for the homes of both Demario James Atwater and Lawrence Alvin Lovette. Curran said. Both have been indicted for first-degree murder in the case. Documents can be sealed to pro tect witnesses or to present the dis tribution of information that only the suspect w ould know, he said. “That's how we separate real witnesses from fake ones," Curran said. But The Durham Herald Company, which operates the Chapel Hill Herald, Ls suing to hare the warrants unsealed. “We suspect that the informa tion in those warrants should be a matter of public record," Herald- Sun Editor Bob Ashley said. The April 28 hearing, at which a judge is likely to decide whether to open the files, might give the pub lic its first glimpse of the events of Jewish community prepares for Passover BY DAN BYRNES STAFF WRITER Six-year-old Mendel Blumingof Chapel Hill searched his house for bread Thursday using a feather, a spoon and a candle. “The candle represents our souls that have to find bad parts in our bodies that tell us not to do the right thing," Mendel said as his father, Rabbi Zalman Bluming, quizzed him on Jewish traditions. Mendel was searching for the Chometz as part of the Bluming family's preparation for Passover, the Jewish festival of freedom. Passover, which begins Saturday, is a week-long Jewish holiday and festival commemorating the libera tion from slavery under foe Egyptian pharaoh and the following exodus of foe Israelites led by Moses. The holiday is also meant for worshippers to focus on finding freedom from vices, or their own pharaohs. Rabbi Bluming said. There are two Seder meals, which take place on the first and second nights of Passover. At those meals, families gather over a Kosher meal and pass on Jewish traditions. The Blumings belong to the local Chabad chapter, which senes students on the campuses of UNC and Duke University. Chabad is the largest outreach Jewish orga nization in the world.
