Shr Sailq Jar Brrl Track squads feature six conference champions; golf teams finish third and fifth in ACC Tournaments [TRACK S FIELD Six North Carolina athletes were named conference champions Satuday foßawing a weekend of ups and downs for the Tar Heel track and field teams at the ACC Outdoor Championships After a slow start on the compe tition's first day, the UNC women steadily crept up the standings to finish in third place. The men, on the other hand, were unable to hold their first place made after day one and had fallen to fifth by the time action concluded. Her time bested the record by more than 10 seconds and earned Felnagle her sixth career ACC championship. On the men’s side, freshman Charles Cox used a time of 45.95 seconds to win the men's 400-meter dash and his first taste of ACC supremacy. Other Tar Heels gained renown during the weekend by covering distance through the air. Freshman Patience Coleman surpassed a regional qualifying mark with her jump of 1.78 meters to take home her first ACC women's high jump title. Sophomore Donte Nall matched Coleman's feat for the Sports Brie Felnagle broke a 21- year-old track record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 1612. UNC men, and he won his second conference high jump championship of the year. Freshmen Brian Moore and Walter Henning topped in the ranks m a pair of field contests for the Tar Heels. Moore garnered his first share of ACC gold with a 65.17 meter hud of the javelin, and Henning turned a 68.71 meter hammer throw into the second ACC triumph of his young career. Junior Chase MacFarland shot a five-under 67 in the final round of the men's tournament Sunday, which took place at the Old North State Club in New London, to climb up the leaderboard four spots and fin ish second overall. In die last round, MacFarland sank eight birdies but scrambled for three bogies. Freshman Kevin O'Connell fin ished in sixth place in the tourna ment shooting a six-under-par 210 for the weekend The rest of the Tar Heels finished in 18th, 24th and 36th place, respectively. UNC finished eight strokes behind tournament champions Florida State Seminoles. who won their first-ever men's golf conference championship with a 26-under-par combined score. The Tar Heels now must prepare for the NCAA regional tournaments, which take place in May The women's team finished strong but did not fare as well as their male counterparts. They shot 40-over-par to reach fifth place. Junior Sydney Crane was the highest-placing Tar Heel at ninth place, shooting a six-over-par 222 for the tournament. Sophomore Kate Thomas finished not far behind after a three-under-par final round, tying her at 13th place at seven over-par.
