News Chapel Hill readies state plan UNC Tomorrow response due May 1 BY REBECCA PUTTERMAN ASSISTANT STATE h NATIONAL EDITOR Last year. UNC-system President Erskine Bowles pulled together the UNC Tomorrow Commission, a committee made up of a diverse group of stakeholders in the state. They attended 11 community and 11 campus forums statewide to understand North Carolina's needs for the next 20 years, and how the UNC system can best meet them. Seven findings were released in December 2007. citing what the state can accomplish in the next 20 years with the help of the system. Each campus will submit its plan for the directive hv May. UNC-Chapel Hill has formed six response committees to make tentative plans for consolidating or expanding existing UNC-CH programs to meet the needs of the state. The proposal is due by May 1. At two public forums last week, the following programs and initia tives were mentioned as potential responses: Global readiness ■ Implement more stringent for eign language requirements and offer cluster courses on global themes. ■ Create a Global Research Institute to bring international scholars to UNC-CH. ■ Expand Triangle partnerships and the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. Access to higher education ■ Further fund and expand Scholars' Latino Initiative. ■ Expand N.C. Reach, which helps foster children attend college and get a debt-free education. ■ Found an undergraduate certifi cate and degree completion program for nontraditional students to get a certificate for career-based courses that would count as college credit. ■ Create a college advising and support program to provide access to college in underserved N.C. regions. Increased public education ■ Found a Public Education Collaborativ e to serv e as a partner ship between the univ ersity and the community to evaluate community needs and then meet them. ■ Carolina Teacher Scholar Program: an academy for scholars to receive enrichment courses and go back to their communities as leaders in teaching math and science. ■ Expand online learning. ■ Expand Career Jump-Start. Economic transformation ■ Found a Center for Community and Economic Transformation to connect disparate initiatives to work on community projects.
