scholarships to 2.5 freshmen to
travel to Singapore. Malaysia and
Thailand. Fisher is participating
again this summer as an alumni
researcher.

When 1 returned this summer to
study abroad once more with the
Carolina SEAS Program for fresh
men. it was obvious that the place
hadn't changed too much, even
though I am no longer a first-vear
student.
Apparently, Singapore's good hab
its don't disintegrate its fast as those
ot a lone college student: The buses
still run on time, the streets are still
vacuumed every evening and the
humming of millions of air-condi
tioning units still fills the night air.
I was excited to watch anew
batch of 25 Tar Heels adjust to the
sometimes surreal surroundings of
Singapore. Oddly enough, it doesn't
take much adjusting.

with the climate—nearly 100
percent humidity and 85 degrees
daily—but soon rediscovered the
joys of air conditioning. Quickly.
Singapore became a home away
from home—very, very far away
from home.
This fiast weekend, everyone left
“home" to make a quick jaunt to
Melaka, a seaside town in Malaysia
that is about a four hour drive from
Singapore. I remembered visit
ing Malaysia last year and having
the sudden realization that street
signs were no longer in English.
The transition was no less shock

case of food poisoning later, we
were back on the bus to Singapore.
Everyone was anxious to get back
into the safe and sanitized con
fines of the city, and even though
I’d been to Melaka the year before,
1 still breathed the same sigh of
relief when I set niv bags down on
my Singaporean mattress. “Home
sweet home!" I heard someone
shout from down the hall.
I've already heard several stu
dents this year refer to Singapore
and Singaporeans as "us" and "we."
as if we can claim it as our own.
Perhaps its just the wish that their
own lives could have a hint of that
same Singaporean comfort, clean
liness and startlingly cold efficien
cy.
