AUTOPSY
FROM PAGE t
The first searches of the resi
dences were completed March 12
and resulted in the seizure of an
ATM receipt generated from the
withdrawal made by Lovette and
Atwater, found at Lovette's house.
The receipt had a shoe print on
it, so in subsequent searches five
days later, investigators seized 19
pairs of shoes from the suspects'
residences to look for matches.
Though the investigators discov
ered the receipt in Lovette’s house,
they still have not recovered Carson's
ATM card, nor her car keys, both of
which also were listed as "propert)
to be seized" in the warrants.
"Assorted vehicle keys" were
taken from Atwater’s apartment
March 12, though none has jet been
identified as belonging to Carson.
Two shotgun shells, ‘assorted
persona] writings" and dothing also
were taken from Atwater's residence.
Several items seen in the ATM cam
era pictures, such as a Houston
Astros cap, as well as ‘dothing with
blood evidence or fiber transfer,"
wen- listed as items to be seized.
Until June 30, Carsons autopsy
and the warrants had been sealed
at the request of Orange County
I ristrict Attorney Jim Woodall.
Woodall asked that the autopsy be
sealed until then iti order to protect

“North Carolina remains one
of the least unionized states in the
nation," he said. “There is a lack of
widespread union presence that
forms a part of the skeletal system
of campaign organizations in some
otiler states.
“Obama still has to have his
own organization, along with the
Democratic Party," he said.
And Cope said the union efforts
and financial support won’t help
only Democratic candidates.
“Some of that money will be used
in a bipartisan way," he said.

the investigation and allow opportu
nities to verify confidential witnesses'
accounts by unpublished accounts.
It is because the information the
witness gave was not public, the
affiant writes in the warrants, that
the testimony should be assumed
“truthful and accurate."
Superior Court Judge Allen
Baddour ruled last week that the
autopsy could be released and also
ordered the release of the warrants.
The defense argued that release
of these documents could compro
mise the fairness of the trial.
“We urge everybody not to have
a rush to judgment and let the legal
system play itself out," Jonathan
Broun, Atwater's attorney, told The
Associated Press.
But Baddour assured the defense
at a hearing June 27 that all judicial
procedures would ensure fairness.
Monday's hearing could be used
as a Rule 24 process, which would
examine "aggravating factors" in
the case to determine if it is a can
didate for the death penalty.
Aggravating factors could include
gang influence, “especially heinous,
atrocious or cruel" crimes or the use
of a deadly weapon all of which
potentially could be considered.

He added that although the
union members will break up into
teams assigned to specific races,
the organization of the campaign
could shift at any time.
“It will actually be changing and
flexible based on what the overall
campaign is and how the polling
data comes back and how we need
to allocate our resources," he said.
Cope ultimately was optimis
tic about the campaign's potential
impact. “This will be the biggest
election spending that public
employees have ever seen."

“To get to the essence of what

that beautiful color."
And even Florkowski agrees
the essays sent in to ESPN can
be hard to argue.

Chapel Hill," he said.

Themes that Thorp said arc

include negotiating relationships
with the town, improving circum

on his faculty and staff relations.
Thorp went on to admit his own
relative inexperience in dealing
with the affairs of the University
as a whole.
“Everything that goes on outside
the College (of Arts and Sciences)
I’m not all that conversant in,"
Thorp said, adding that he recog

"And I can't do that until I’m the

Even after more than 25 years at
UNC, Thorp said he’s committed to

new leader.
While Tuesday was his first day
with the title, Thorp will be installed
as chancellor on University Day,
Oct. 12.
