fa Daily fa Back in the swing of things BY DANIEL PRICE ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR After weeks of practice in anticipation of defending its 2007 national title, the North Carolina field hockey team got a shot in the arm Saturday. Teammates welcomed back for mer midfielder/forward Jesse Gey, who is serving as an undergradu- ate assistant this season, and mid fielder Katelyn Falgowski. Both arrived home from Beijing after competing with Team USA. But even since returning this past weekend, Falgowski and Gey have been absent from pre season practices. They’re not injured or sick. Their absences come on orders from 20 0 7 National Coach of the Year Karen Shelton, who wanted Gey and Falgowski to have time to readjust to campus life and Eastern Standard Time. Olympian Jesse Gey will act as undergraduate assistant during the 2008 season Sophomore Katelyn Falgowski will provide scoring power this year “They have to be exhausted,” Shelton said. “That 12-hour time difference is a real hurdle, and it takes two weeks to really recover.” But the two members of 2007’s All-America teams, who accounted for more than half of the team’s assists last year, don’t have two weeks to adjust. The season-opener is Saturday against N0.9 Michigan, the Tar Heels’ first game of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Take 15/501 South towards Pittsboro Exit Market St. / Southern Village BABYLON AD. Shelton hopes Falgowski will be able to go at full speed, but the sec ond-year player said the transition from Beijing hasn’t been easy. “Definitely I went through an adjustment period, a little jet lag and stuff,” Falgowski said, adding, “I’ve been playing hockey for the last eight months, and when you have a week off, it feels like you haven’t played in months.” If the Tar Heels are to earn back-to-back national titles for the second time in school history, Falgowski will prove vital. The Landenberg, Pa.-native is UNC’s leading returning scorer after she racked up 39 points on nine goals and a team-best 21 assists in 2007. The only two Tar Heels to outscore Falgowski were Gey and Honda Award-winner Rachel Dawson, each of whom tal lied 44 points. While Gey no longer sports the Carolina blue No. 15 on game days, that won’t stop her from getting out on the field at Henry Stadium during practice. “She’s going to be out here, still training,” Shelton said. “She’s got a long international future in front of her. “This is a good environment, one that’s safe for her, but she can still give back to the program at the same time.” And though Gey is ultimately 919-929-0213 www.thebicyclechajn.conn Durham: 639 Broad st.
