(MCT) - Although the public opinion polls find Barack Obama lead ing John McCain by 2-1 among young voters, the 72-year-old Arizona Republican senator has youthful supporters who are looking to him for change. OOb/ll 63 Bush pressures Congress to permit offshore drilhng, as opposition wanes WASHINGTON (MCT) - Amid signs that Democratic opposition is weakening, President Bush on Tuesday stepped up pressure on Congress to lift its ban on off shore drilling, saying the dam age caused by Hurricane Gustav makes it clear that the nation needs to increase its domestic oil supply. “When Congress comes back, they’ve got to understand that we need more domestic energy, not less ... and one place to find it is offshore America, lands that have been taken off the books, so to speak, by congressional law,” Hanna kills 26, headed to U.S. MIAMI (MCT) - Families screamed for help from rooftops in parts of Haiti, where floods and mudslides from Tropical Storm Hanna has led to 26 deaths and deepened the country’s desperate food shortage. The storm is expected to begin rolling toward the Bahamas on Wednesday, with a landfall in the United States likely for Friday. Hanna’s maximum sustained winds were near 60 mph, but fore casters at the National Hurricane Center said it could regain hurri cane strength and turn toward the east coast of Florida, Georgia or South Carolina. With the ban set to expire Sept. 30, the issue is sure to dominate debate when Congress ends its month-long summer break next week. And as Republicans gear up for a no-holds-barred battle to prevent the Democratic-led Congress from renewing the ban, they’re ecstatic that even Californians are wavering in their decades-old opposition to coastal drilling. “I’d much rather American consumers be buying gasoline produced from American oil than from foreign oil,” Bush said. Louisiana canal close to flooding NEW ORLEANS (MCT) - New Orleans may have dodged a bullet or a big cascading wall of water —but Hurricane Gustav’s near-miss showed how vulnerable this low-lying city remains. “Had the storm surge been 1 or 2 feet higher, with the wind whipping like it was, the water would have been pouring over those flood walls, not sloshing over,” said Richard Campanella, a Tulane University geographer who has studied the levees. “In the Industrial Canal, those flood walls were indeed tested, and I hope they don’t have to be tested again.” Wtf\r\i'r\g Isr\'+ •E.ve*“y“Hi7\g the untold story of the UNC Women's Soccer dynasty Film followed by a Q&A with Professor Hap Kindem, documentarian . THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 FILM FESTIVAL FROM PAGE 3 extends to all members of the com munity, no matter how young. “I’m a teacher, so I contacted the middle and high schools and tried to get it advertised there,” Harris said. “Last year we had a ninth grader submit a couple films and I think she even won an award.” Harris said the quality of such submissions throughout the brief history of the festival makes him wonder why it wasn’t instituted long ago. “I remember seeing something about the festival the first year and thinking to myself, ‘Are you kid ding me? This is the first year?’” he said. “It seems like something that should be in its 30th year.” While plans remain to keep the size of the film festival relatively unchanged for the foreseeable future, McQuaid said the variety of the films submitted so far is encouraging. “We get documentaries, classical narrative films, strange, quirky art films, even some animations,” he said. “It’s a real impression of the variety you find in the local film community.” Contact the Arts Editor at artsdesk@unc.edu.
