12 MONDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2008 Coyotes concern alderman Forest manager: Animals not a threat BY GWEN SAUNDERS STAFF WRITER A coyote startled Randee Haven- O’Donnell about two weeks ago when it bounded across the trail in front of her, pursuing a squirrel in the Carolina North Forest. “I had heard that coyotes were migrating east over the last 10 to 12 years, but I just didn’t expect to see it,” said the Carrboro resident and member of the Board of Aldermen. The incident sparked Haven- O’Donnell’s concern about public awareness of coyotes, the possibil ity that the animals could transmit rabies and the safety of children walking through the woods. She recently sent an e-mail to local leaders presenting these concerns. Gregory Kopsch, forest manager for Carolina North, said coyotes, which live in all 100 counties of North Carolina, don’t pose a sig nificant threat. “The risk is very minimal; coy otes are very reclusive and tend to keep to themselves,” he said. “The SBSfS WBBBBktKK g/k EXTRAS; Bax Vow Ad: sl/day Bold Tour Ad: $3/day (BR = Bedroom •BA = Bath •mo = month •hr = hour •wk = week • W/D = washer/dryer > 080 =or best offer •AC = air conditioning •w / = with •LR = living room | 3pm, two business days prior j Announcements NOTICE TO Ail DTH CUSTOMERS Deadlines are NOON one business day prior to publication for classified ads. Coyotes tend to live in areas similar to the Carolina North for est on the edge of woods, in open meadows and in uncultivated fields. And only about a dozen or fewer coyotes live in the forest where Haven-ODonnell was running. Kopsch said there is little con cern that coyotes transmit rabies. In 2007, 245 raccoons and 98 skunks tested positive for the dis ease, according to the 2007 N.C. Rabies Report But only three of the 474 reported rabies cases —a typical number of annual rabies cases were coyotes. “They are not prime transmit ters of rabies,” Kopsch said. “They are more susceptible to canine dis temper and parvo disease, which they could spread to our animal Place a Classified: www.dailytarheel.com/classifieds or Call 919-962-0252 Child Care Wanted CHILD CARE NEEDED. Bobby Schopler, vice presi dent of the Board of Directors for the Piedmont Wildlife Center in Durham, said coyotes are not threatening animals. He said deer are most threaten ing to humans as they often cause fatal car accidents. “I’d be happy to go walking in woods that had coyotes in them,” Schopler said. “Coyotes have been present in Orange County for at least 10 years. They are a part of our environment.” Haven-ODonnell said her goal is for the public to be aware of coyotes’ presence, and she recommended that local governments and UNC collaborate to educate people about the animals’ behaviors. Kopsch said he would support a public awareness program but stressed that coyotes are not a threat in this area. Contact the City Editor at citydesk@unc.edu.
