Democrats hold
57 Senate seats
WASHINGTON, D.C. (MCT)
Democrats added another
Senate seat Thursday when they
managed a victory in Oregon,
leaving only three contests unde
cided.
Democrat Jeff Merkley, a state
legislator, defeated two-term
Republican Sen. Gordon Smith by
about 40,000 votes. Smith called
Merkley to concede.
Democrats will control 57 of
the Senate’s 100 seats, still short of
a filibuster-proof 60-vote major
ity, which would enable them to
move their agenda more easily.
Blacks, Latinos
crucial to Prop. 8
SAN JOSE, Calif. (MCT) -
Even as black and Latino voters
were a powerful force in boost
ing America’s first black presi
dent to victory, in California
they also were crucial to passing
Proposition 8, a ballot measure
labeled, “Eliminates right of
same-sex couples to marry.”
Exit polls showed that 70
percent of black voters, and a
majority of Latino voters, voted
yes on Proposition 8, one likely
reason why the measure won
a slim majority in Los Angeles
County, where pre-election polls
had suggested it would lose.

President-elect announces Emanuel
pick for White House chief of staff
CHICAGO (MCT) - President
elect Barack Obama took his first
public steps toward building his
new administration Thursday, tap

Emanuel to be the White House
chief of staff.
Obama also received his first
top-secret briefing on national
security, scheduled a meeting
Friday with his economic advisers
and accepted an invitation for he

The pick of Emanuel, a veteran

Israeli official: too
soon for Iran talks
JERUSALEM (MCT) - Israeli
Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, a
contender for prime minister in
February elections, said the presi
dent-elect shouldn’t rush to talk to
Iran as it could be interpreted in
the region as a sign of weakness.
Livni’s comments were a first
signal of disagreement with
Barack Obama’s readiness for
dialogue with Iran from a senior
Israeli government official.
She also met with Secretary of
State Condoleezza Rice, who all
but said that an Israeli-Palestinian
peace deal by the end of the year
would not be reached.

now a top leader in the U.S. House

Obama said Emanuel’s years

‘Obama Babies’
expected in July
CHICAGO (MCT) - The term
“Obama Baby” joined the English

Tuesday’s crowds of emotionally

A Chicago media research

a survey. Hope and beer fueled
her decision.

Speakers emphasized the impor

Hate Speech document, drawn up by
student leaders earlier in the semes

for hate speech on the campus.
Adam Cloninger, chair of the
Student Government Diversity

this situation for discussion.
“The crowd was very supportive,”
said Cloninger. “There were lots of

The document also is in response

meeting found earlier this semester.
Despite the negative incident,
Rogers said the election yielded posi
