On Sundays, her day off, Freeman said she slept all day because her work was so exhausting. “Now that I know more about Congo, I really think that something needs to be done,” said Jenna Price, a junior biology major. “I would like to be more active in trying to get in touch with our government about helping out in Congo.” When she returned to the U.S., Freeman went into an expensive clothing store with her sister. The Congo also faces diseases that are nonexistent in the U.S. today because of vaccines. Freeman said she wasn’t trained to treat measles because it would never be seen in the U.S. “The first time I saw a kid die in the measles tent I started yelling,” Freeman said. “I was so frustrated that they died from something that was so easily prevented in the United States.” Since the outbreak of fighting, the hospital where Freeman worked has been evacuated of all doctors and many of the staff have fled. “I would love to go back to the Congo now and help,” she said. “I really wish I could.” Contact the City Editor at citydesk@unc.edu.
