6 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2008 Restoration of West Franklin mural begins BY SARAH LAMORTE STAFF WRITER The 17 murals have become a distinct characteristic of the down town Chapel Hill area, but poor care and vandalism over the years left them in disrepair. Michael Brown, a UNC graduate and Chapel Hill native, agreed to restore the murals 19 years after he painted the first one. He started Thursday working on “Musical Youth,” which shows young people playing instruments, on West Franklin Street. “I promised I’d be here to do this when the time came, and the time has come,” Brown said. The restoration is part of the Painted Walls Project spearhead fIHKi mm sßskhSbi i,. Through the Painted Walls Project, 13 murals will be restored if sufficient funds are raised from a combination of community dona tions and grants. The $3,000 restoration of the “Musical Youth” mural will be paid for partly through a grant. The Chapel Hill Historical Society and Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership also are helping orga nize the restoration project.
