Monday, there would be no repeat performance against the No. 1 North Carolina mens basketball team. Danny Green led the Tar Heels with a career-high 26 points in a 115-70 romp against their host in the opening round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Green went 11-of-17 from the floor plus seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks —and was one of four Tar Heels who hit dou ble digits. Three others had nine points. One was freshman Ed Davis, who got his first career start in the game, going 4-for-6 from the floor and pulling down eight rebounds, even recording three blocks. Coach Roy Williams said Friday after the game against the University of California at Santa Barbara that he probably wouldn’t play Hansbrough in Maui, at least not three days in a row. But Hansbrough wasn’t even needed against the Division II Silverswords, who played only seven players and suffered their second worst loss in program history. Monday’s was the first official game of Chaminade’s season. Thirteen Tar Heels saw action Monday night —and all of them scored at least four points —and freshman Justin Watts offered his Sports first significant contribution, with nine points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal in 11 minutes. The Tar Heels shot 60.8 percent on the night, including 45.5 per cent from behind the 3-point line. But the Tar Heels struggled from the free throw line after finish ing 22-of-31 Friday against UCSB, North Carolina went only 9-of-17 Monday, not quite 53 percent. The Silverswords were held to only 28.6 percent in the first half eight converted baskets of 28 attempts 41.7 percent in the game, and had 24 turnovers in the game to the Tar Heels’ seven. Shane Hanson, Chaminade’s lead ing scorer with 15 points, went only 5-for-17 his only made baskets were five of his 12 attempted 3-point ers. Hanson led five Silverswords players in double digits. UNC will play the winner of the Alabama-Oregon game in the semifinals Tuesday. Earlier Monday, Notre Dame and Texas both rolled in their open ing games in the Invitational. Instead, she used All-American teammate Brie Felnagle to help her against the rest of the competition in Terre Haute, Ind. “I just tried to keep Brie in sight,” she said. “Brie is always a front-runner. “That was the plan, and I just stuck to it.” That plan was effective, and Felnagle finished fourth and Holesh finished 30th to take home All-America honors in their final race of the season. The two became the first pair of All-Americas for UNC in the same season since three Tar Heels were named All-Americas in 2003. It was just the third time North Carolina has accomplished the feat. “They were very focused,” coach Michael Whittlesey said of the pair’s runs in Monday’s champi onship. “It was a good trip for the two.” Felnagle ended her illustrious cross country career at UNC with her highest finish ever at the NCAA Championships. She broke the 20-minute mark with a time of 19:53.3 despite bat tling her second cold this month. “I didn’t know how I was going to feel,” she said. “But it didn’t real ly affect the race.” The senior said she is just happy to be able to rest now that the sea son is over. She certainly has earned it dur ing her career at North Carolina, finishing first on the team at the ACC and NCAA championships in every year of her career. But the race had a different feel for Holesh —one that was less final in tone. The junior emerged this season as one of the Tar Heels’ top runners Senior Brie Felnagle placed fourth in the NCAA championships, her last run as a Tar Heel. after injuries and illnesses crippled the team. “There was a gaping hole on our team,” she said. “I figured someone had to close that hole, so I just worked hard over the summer.” Now Holesh will be expected to lead the team that returns most of its top runners besides Felnagle next season. The team is already brimming with expectations —as is Holesh, who hopes to move into the Top 16 at the NCAA Championships next season. BRINGING THE HEAT-TWICE! Despite Felnagle and Holesh’s successes, this championship meet marked the first in 11 years that the Tar Heels did not qualify as a team. But Whittlesey said he believes his team will be up to the chal lenge next year, after finishing third in the regional this season only one spot short of a trip to nationals. “We came very close to pulling it off,” he said. “We’ll be back.” Contact the Sports Editor at sports@unc.edu.
