Gibbons, Rev. P. J. Carraway of the N. C. Conference, to Miss Mattie K. Foster, daughter ol Dr. Peter S. Foster. At the District Tarsonage, Olin N. C, May 13th 1S73, by Rev. M. L. Wood, G. W. Web ber, Esq., to Miss Nannie A. Loftin, all of Ire doll county, JS. C. 53 c a t Ij s Mrs. Virginia P. Cook, was born in Gran ville county, July 9th 1810, was married to Dr. J. II. Cook, February 2Clh 1SC8, and died in the town of Warrenton, May 5th, 1873. She was lor several years a member of the M. E. Church, South. She was amiable, gentle and self-sacriiieiug. In her earnest desire to se cure the happiness of others, especially her beloved husband, and the immediate members of the family, she ever lost sight of her own co;u!ort. Her sickness was protracted, and her suffering intense, but she bore it with re markable patieiice and fortitude. Her faith was full of coialort, and inspired a lively uud blessed hope. It was hard lor her to leave her family, b;u by the grace of God she was enabled to say. 4-The will of the Lord be doue " ller bereaved husband, dear little Lizzie und many liiends, will miss her greatly, but their loss will be her gain. R. A. Willis. Departed this life on the 2Cth of April, ltoS, at her residence in Chatham county, N. C. Mrs. Sallie Dorsett, aged about 50 yearn, and wife of Robt. Dorsett, Esq. The deceased was for many years a cons tant member of the M. E. Church, and al though she labored under doubts and lears, and sometimes expressed dissatisfaction, her conduct through life gave undoubted assur ance to all who knew her, that she was a Christian lady, and that our loss is her eter nal gain. She was a kind and affectionate wife, a noble mother, a fond and loving sisi.er, and a generous and kind neighbor. "None knew her but to love.'' We mourn not as those who have no hope. She has run the good race, fought the good light and has gone, we hope, to receive her reward in heaven. Blessed are the puro in heart, for they shall see God. A So.. Died, in Charlotte, N. C, April 13th 1973, Mrs. Iiarriet N. Breui, wife of Col. Thos. H. Brem. The suoject of this notice was bcrn March 2Cth 1S24, married to Dr. Edmund II. Jones, Nov. 2nd 1843. Married to Col. Thos. H. Brem, Sept. 15th 1858. She died therefore at the age of 49 years and 17 days. Mrs. Brem was the daughter of Dr. D. R. Duulap, who was long add favorably known ia this city as a cultivated geutleman, a de votedly pious Christian and a most exemplary member of the M. E. Church, South. Iler mothor was a daughter of Judge Lowery and a relative of Capt. Jack, the bearer of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence to Philadelphia. Thus she was blessed with honored and pious parents, and trained up in the great principles of the Gospel of Christ. Mrs. Brem joined the M. E. Church, South, about 30 years ago, and lived and died in the Faith. The writer first saw her a little over a year ago, under circumstances which he can never forget. She was dangerously 111, and seemed to be in a great conflict in reference to her spiritual condition. She said she did not en joy that realizing sense of the favor of God which she desired. She was exhorted to a re view of the principles of her faith, and the ac tions of her life. Thia she evidently did with much self-examination and earnest prayer to God. She longed lor a fuller baptism of the lioly Ghost and a bnguter manifestation of the Father's love. The great burden of her prayer seemed to be: 'Nearer, my God to thee, Nearer to thee, Ev'u though it be a cross That raiseth me: Still, all my song shtll be, Nearer, my God to thee, Nearer to thee." At a subsequent visit, a few days later, she asked us to sing for her. A part of -that beautitul Hymn, composed by Kiriham, which is a string of pearls, of swiet precious prom ises: "How firm a foundation, ye saints 01 the Lord, Is laid for your faith iu his Excellent word ! What more can he say than to You he hath said, You w'ao unto Jesus for refuge Have fled," was sung. While we tried to sing, power IK vine ciiiie down, and she was enabled to praise God aloud. Her heart was full of peace aud joy. The writer has seen her often, and conversed with her much since that happy hour; and has alwxys found her strong in faith and hope, patiently waiting for tho summons of the Mas ter to "depart and be with Christ which is far better." The timo at last came for her to "pass over the river" of death, and "rest un der the shade" of the tree of life. She was ready. Unexpectedly called to see her die she had spoken her last words and was sink ing gradually into the cold waters of death, without a groan or struggle, she sweetly pass ed away, thus demonstrating the blessed truth that "The soul that on Jesus still lean far repoee I will not, I will not, desert to his foes. That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake. I'll never, no never, so xeVkr forsake." Sister Brem had many noble and beautiful traits ot character. God grant that her hus band, relatives and friends who mourn her de parture, may trust the same blessed Saviour, and follow her to the same blissful abode! L. S. Bckkhead. James William Johnson, son of William and Mary Suaan Johnson his wife, was born Jan, 24th 1808, died March 16th 1873. If we be lieve that Jesus died and arose again, even so also them that sleep in Jubub will God bring with him. Death may the bands of life unloose, But can't dissolve my love. Millions of infant souls compose, Th'i family above, His words the happy parente hear, And shout with joys divine; 'O Saviout all we have and are, Shall be forever thine.'
