At a meeting of the citizens assem bled at the City Hall, on Wednesday, Sept. 28th, at 7 p. m. John D. Davis was elected chairman and L. A. Potter was chosen Secretary. The chairman stated the object of the meeting to be, to give expression to their views on the fight now going onbetween the Midland and Richmond and XUnville Railroads. After remarks by yafious citizens the following preamble and resolutions. were unanimously adopted. Whereas, The encroachments upon the rights and disregard of the interests of tb.e people of North Carolina, by the Richmond and Danville Railroad Com pany have reached a point when the people should express their disap probation, and V - Whereas, We believe, that by a faiU ure to complete the line and branches of the Western North Carolina Rail road within the" time allowed by the State authorities, they of right should and have forfeited their' claim to the ownership of said road, and Whereas, Senator Z. B. Vance has by his earnest efforts to secure to the citi zens of North Carolina generally and tbe people of Eastern North Carolina especially, the benefits of a North Car olina System of. Railroads, incurred the displeasure pf the said .Richmond and Danville Corporation and- their friends Therefore, resolved: 1st. We earnestly reque-t our Stale authorities and the Board of Commis sioners for said Western Railroad, to nee erery lawful endeavor to secure foi Wm J. Best and the Midland Railroad the Western North Carolina Railroad with its franchises and priyileges. 2nd. That it is the duty of every citi-j zen in Eastern North Carolina to use his influence to secure a connected andj continuous line of railroad from the; western line of North Carolina to Beaufort harbor. ' j 3rd. That the thanks of this meeting of the citizens of Beaufoit, are due and hereby tendered to our Senator Hon. Z B. Vance for the stand he has taken for North Carolina in the fight now going on between W. J. Best, President of the Midland Railroad Company and Presi dent Buford of the Richmond and Dan ville Railroad Company. 4th. That tte hereby tender to Gov, J.arvis and Treasurer Worth our thanks for the action they have latterly taken in the same fight and we feel that the lasting gratitude of the people of Eastern North CBrolina ?s due to Gov. Jarvis for preventing the lease of the Atlantic Road to the Wilmington and Wefdoti Railroad Company at a time, too, when a large majority of the private stock holders were in favor of said lease. &th. We hereby, assure Mr. Best and the Company he represents of our sym- pathy an! whatever. aid we may be able to give hfm in his noble efforts to give us a North Carolina system of railroads from the sea shore across the mountains to Western Railroad connections, thus giving us greater commercial facilities and unifying the people of ' the State making of us one people? in sentiment and interest and all working together for the best interest of our common Mother. The Tele phone Cays : Wednesday, quite a large catch was made at the Bogue Banks fishery near Fort Macon, and on Thurs day morning a flag of rejoicing was hoisted at the same fishery, soon followed by a similar signal at Mulfet pond fishery, where they had landed about 50 or 60 barrels of very large roe mullets.
