The Campaign in Virginia.
Hardly at any time within the
history of American politics has
party spirit run so high as in Vir
ginia daring the present campaign.
There-have not occurred less than
a half dozen duels, and we reason
i
ally conclude, from the ferocity of
the campaign, the Majione idea has
prevailed to an extent to disturb
our brethren across tne border.

Trade.
The New York Daily Commercial
Bulletin . illustrates tho course of
mcxlern trade as follows : As a
striking illustration of the present;
anomalous condition of the export
trade, consequent upon unhealthy
speculation, .a French commercial
firm informs us! that correspon-
dent of theirs in Havre is shipping
back to them a consignment of
flour which had been forwarded
from here. The flour will sell!at a
higher price in this market, even
with all the out and back charges
added. Comment is unnecessary. !

The Clyde syndicate have re
plied to the letter of tho State j
Commissioners asking them to sur
render the Western North Caro
lina Railroad to Mr. Best and re
fuse to give up their purchase.
They say they intend to hold raid
operate the road and finish it to
both western terminal points. So
far from antagonizing Mr. Best's
plan of a North Carolina system,
they will make connection with his
read at Salisbury, giving him im
perial access to j their road. Be
sides finishing the road according
to the contract, they strongly, inti
mate an intention of extending
it direct to Chattanooga, which
will make the j long wished for
