towing is a summary of the Democrat's
totton crop specials :
Alabama Reports from a number of
points indicate the crop to be abdut 86
per cent, of that of last year. The
weather has been very wet and unfavor
able for picking. Aboutj one-half of the
trop has been marketed. Picking will
be over by November 10,
Arkansas The yield
of that of last year, or
is 63 per. cent.

80 per cent, of the crop has been gath

Tennessee The yield is 50 per cent,
of; last year's crop. Three-eighths of
the crop has been marketed. Picking
Will be over by November 20th.
Texas -The yield is about 58 percent.
Picking will be over by j December 1st.

Senate Proceedings.
Washington October , 2$. Owing to
the late hour at 'which ' ' the Senate ad
journed last night, there was but a small
attendance of Senators when the journal
was read this morning. i
Mr. Hill, of Georgia, offered the fol
lowing resolution :
Resolved, That appointments to office
under the Federal Government ought not
to be made to control or influence elec
tions in the several States, and appoint
ments made with; such intent are unwise,
unpatriotic, and contrary to the spirit of
pur political institutions, and if continued
without rebuke by the: people will be"
come dangerous to the perpetuity of our
institutions- j . J
Mr. Hill asked for the immediate con
sideration of the resolution, but Mr. Mc
Millan objecting, it was laid over under
the rules. I .
Indicted for Going Security.
New Orleans, October 29. Assis
tant Recorder Shehan was yesterday in
dicted by the grand jury for violaltng
the law prohibiting judicial officers from
going security in their own courts;. He
waa released on j one thousand dollars

Death of Gen. Clark,

egram from Frankfort announces the
death of Gen. Clark in this city. He
had been'ill for a ling time. He was

Melbourne, October 29. The steam
er Calcutta, left here for Sydney, found
ered at sea during a gale. All on board,

American political, systems, and, while

The Telephone has this to say of per
sons well known here as in Beanfort:

Reiger, wno have returned to Beaufort
for a visit, after an absence of eight or

Accident to Steamer Contentnea.
The Contentnea on her way down
yesterday, ran foul, of a stump or log and
stove a hole in her side, but owing to the
ttoolness, presence of mind and persevere
ance of Capt. Styron, fshe was promptly
gotten off and damage repaired, reaching
the cit)last night at ten o'clock all safe
and sound.
