V "Quarterly Conference -The first quarterly meeting of the Conference year of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, .will te held for the church .in i this place Saturday and Sunday, De- cemberliOth and 11th, Rev.' J. E. Maun presiding. TjEHUan Monument. A veryj hand some monument is erecting at the grTe- 4f Col. It. F. Lehman jin the Federal Cemetery, to perpetuate the memory i of one of the distinguished Northerners who made New Berne hi home after the war, and who, as a citizen, is cherished by our people for the many excellent qualities he poes eessed. Mr. Best in Boston. From the Bos ton Herald we learn that Mr. Best, ac com panted by Senator Vance, was in Boston the latter part of the week, and had a ry atiefllctory meeting of his syndicate and other Eastern capitalists. Mr. Best gae a resume of Iris jopera tions here, anf a glance at the future prospects of the Midland line. He stated that the road had built aneff pier, cost ing 8000; twelve new box cars; taken up and straightened the crooked rails in the line; put in a large number f new lies and brought the road bed up pur chased two new first-classpassenger cars; rebuilt the old Bluebird locomotive, now worth ten thousand dollars; graded six teen miles of road in the direction of SmitUfleld, bridged and had it ready for lieirig and ironing, and by January ex pected to be running into Smithfiejld. Of tlie development of business over the old .Atlantic road he stated that it had been beyond the present capacity of the road to move, and the terminal transportation facilities at New Berne to handle,! and with adequate facijities he could have largely increased the business alreadv done. He stated that he had received the most substantial evidences of the good will and hearty co operation of the peo ple all along the existing and projected lin of! the Midland, aud looked to a i great future for tLe scheme in hind. Introducing the North-Carolinian with liim as one three tirnce elected Governor aud twice to the Senate of the Ur.ited States, Senator Vance remarkedjtbat he : had little to say except to endorse the statements of Mr. Best and to pledge him : his continued support in the prosecution of the Midland Scheme. Senator Vance i welcomed the employment of Eastern energy and Boston capital in North Car ; olina, and extended a cordial invitation ' to those around him. The indications are not those of a col" lapse of the Mrdlau enterprise, as we are afraid some fondly hope. j Arrivals at the Hotels. GASTON HOUSE--S.R. Street. J December 7, 1881.
