And in the world, far, far on high, We may together live, ' Then angel of my heart my soul. Farewell, oh ! fare thee well j- Barnum ox Money .Making. A very inter esting; lecture on the shortest and surest way of making a fortune was delivered in the Freetrade ' Hall, Manchester, on. Saturday last, by one of the most famous masters of this -rathe,r difficult art, the renowned PhineasJT. Karnum. A very large audience, numbering probably upwards of 100, assembled at the appointed hour to see the great showman, and to hear from his lips the results of his extensive observations, and varied experience touching the important matter on which hfuhad engaged to speak. Like most of the speculation . of which Mr. Barnum has had the management, the lecture was of great success. It might have been supposed that a gentleman who is believed to be the cleverest and most successful humbug of the age, would have been a rather unsound teach er and an unsafe guide, and that some of the prin ciples ot action which he might recommend would be such as a rigid moralists could not altogether approye. In this respect onlyHt is probable that the lecture disappointed the expectations of many of its headers. It was unexceptionable in point of morality as it was amusing in point of style, and received, as it well deserved, the hearty approba-. tion and applause of the audience. Mr. Barnum took it for granted that every man whom he ad-. dressed would rather be rich than ' poor, hear, fhear, he need not, therefore, waste many words ' in glorifying money, orproving that in itself it was a good thing. Xor need he say much in refu- . tation of the vulgarianacy that the money-getter was necessarily sordid and mean ; or that goodness was necessarily thriftless and imprudent. On the contrary, moiiy-getting (which was commerce ) ' was one of the most useful, and, consequently, one of theyrtiost honorable, of all occupations the parent of civilization, and of innumerable bles sings t mankind. The greatest and wisest of uienb'all ages, from Abraham, the first merchant on record, down to the present day, were almost . 'invariably distinguished tor' their knowledge and their skillful practice of the art of making and of keeping money. As a striking instance of this fact, he referred to Shakespeare, whom he describ- i ed as being, par excellence, a clever, and thrifty showman, whose highest aim was to hit the pop? ,. nlar taste, to wiite such plays as would draw the best, houses, nnd so to nut money in his nurse ft I description of tlie immortal bard which seemed to ! tnke thenudince somewhat by; suri.rise, and to i find but little favor in their sight. Besides Shake I speare, Chaucer, and Scotton this side of the At lantic, and PiTscdtt, Bancroft and Irving on the ' others were examples -of men Eminent at once in -I literature and in this most useful of arts. Marl ! borough and Wellington were almost a remark I ble for their" thrift and economy as for their niili i tarv renins, and, had Washington not. been the greatest of patriot soldiers,"he might have ranked high as a merchant or a millionaire. As there were three ways in which men might become great, so there were three way in which they plight become wealthy. Some men were born rich"! sofne achiev ofl riches : some had riches thrust UDon them. - He i had only tit speak of the. way in which men might I achieve riches, and he at once admitted thathe j had absolutely nothing to say on that point which i was View.. lie could only repeat and urge once i more the old and well known rules, of prudence and economy, illustrating those- ancient saws wherever he could .by modern instances. The loturer proceeded in a very forcible manner to state and enforce those rules for making money which-he considered most important, interspers ing them with numerous amusing anecdotes, which were exceedingly well told faud well received. The rules were such as the followiug: Be honest; be prompt in making engagements, and exact in fulfilling them ; persevere ; advertise ; tell no more about your business than is necessary ; nererpasa a week-day without reading a good newspaper (a maxim which we beg heartily to enforce,) and others equally trite and equally sensible. Of the humor of the lecture it is impossible for us to give anything1 like a satisfactory specimen. Mr. Bar--mini concluded his remarks by a very ingenious and aimisin&defcnce of humbug, which he de fined to be the art of dressing up an object so as to render, it attractive ; of putting on glittering appearances for the sake 01 arresting attention. This was only deserving of blame when the ar ticle put forward was not what it professed to be. , When the object offered for sale or or show was intrinsically good, wa3 allowable, he. contend ed, to draw attention to it by every legitimate means; and on this principle- he dicatj. own conduct, and maintained that he acted to- ; ward the public in an lionorable nd stnughwor ward manner. Mr. Barnum concluded his addresa amid loud applause, and. on retiring, was called ; back to receive the hearty approbation of the ao dience, voted him by acclamation a compliment. wUcb he acknowledged in a humorous and ap- -propnate speech. Manchester Examiner, Oct. II. At Columbus, Indiana, on the 27th, in the ami . of Shrewsbury & Price vs. Newherter a verdict ; was rendered for the former for $10,000, when the latter drew a pistol and shot himself throngn the heart, killing instantly. ,. .
