Attempt to Rescuk On Monday nig-ht last, :
saj-s the Leisure. Hour of last week, an abortive
attempt was made, to liberate from our Jail, Obe- "
diah Christinas, wjio is to be r'wd next week at
I'ersoU County Superior Court, for the murder of
a slave. A bar of iron iu one of the iipjKr win- 1
dows, was sawed about a third through, but pro-.
bably owing1 to some alarm the persons engaged
in the attempt tied, leaving their ladder, ropes
and a bag. T. H. (J., was marked on the bag.
The Jail is new and very strong. If the effort
had succeeded op. the window, the difficulties to
be afterwards 'encountered, would have, been in
superable. 'To effect an entrance would .'require"
far greater skill and determination than was
evinced in the attempt of Monday night. An ef
fort was niado upon the Trout' door, but without '
any success. '
. The Revival. There have been fifty-four pro
fessions of religion during the reKgious Awaken- 1
ing now oing on in this place, says the Leisure
Hour? Rev. Mr. Burton, after having preached '
some twenty four sermons was compelled to leave
for other fields of duty. The conversions were
made under his ministry. Rev. Mr. Moore, of
the Methodist church, is assisting our resident
ministers in advancing the good work.

For the last sixty days there lias been almost a
total suspension of North Carolina trade, conse
quent .upon the inadequate supply of water in
the feeder of the Dismal Swamp Canal. We un
derstand that there is but three feet of water in
die Canal, instead of the depth required by nine :
tenths of the vessels using that navigation.
