A Nov. 29, 1858. Dear Progress: Last week was our Superior Court. His Honor, Judge Heath, presiding. Our people over this way appear fo like, him very much, that is, if their sayings are a true; index to what they really think. He seems to preside with that dignity and ease that frequently char acterize great men. I believe that his; charges and decisions were as satisfactory to all parties as the nature of the casus would admit. You know that every body in j;oing to law disires to victo rizeover their opponents whether. they are on the rio-lit side or not. 'The action of our Legislature E in continuing Judge Heath's appointment was re- ceived here, by our citizens generally, with much satisfaction. He seems to take with the people so well that 1 should not wonder very; rnuch if another Judge was Luade Governor one of these days. Last Thursday (being thanksgiving day,) our town was pretty quidt. Our people are generally divided upon such give thanksjwhile ot occasions. tome ot uiem hers don't. A Governor can't exactly govern everyj body in all cases. This morning the Judge and Lawers took pas nge in the Steamer Pf .mpli.co for the Hyde Coun ty Court House, for the purpose of doing up the Court business in that County. l - Our Railroad project, from here to. Milton, is not. a dead letter ye t jby any means, as I hear from the. Capital that many members of our Leg islature are. favorably disposed towards the enter prise. Should we obtain such a desirable end, how many daily papers will be started here is a matter to be studied about in future days. The snorting of a Locomotive in and out of our town two or three times in each day would change our present gloomy appearance very much, to say nothing about the extra employment that' would be given to a portion of our youngsters ; who are now flying around at little of nothing. They niight be Conductors, (Mail Agents or something of the kind. Our railroad men don't make enough fuss about their darling object, Ijshould judge, as the papers iu the State has not found out yet, that we had such a big meeting sometime ago, but it is hourly expected that some of them will skin their eye upon the subject. 1 The wenther is moderately warm, and rather cloudy with s.me rain occasionally. Very Truly, ' ELM GROVE Jlr. Sydney Herbert on Auoiirmouci Journalism. The opening of the npw buildings recently erect ed by the members of the Warmiuister Athenaeum, an institution established for the promotion of lit erature and science, was inaugurated iu that town on the 2ith October. A public meeting was held in the lecture room, at which the Marquis of Hath presided, supported by the Eight Hon. j Sydney -Herbert, M. P., Lord Henry Thynne, the Hon and Kev. S. S. Pest, Mr. Edward Haines, of Leeds, President , of the Yorkshire Association of Me chanics' Institutes, the liev. A. Fane, . Vicar of Varininister, and a large number of the gentry and clergy .of the town and neighborhood. The Right Hon. S. Herbert, M. P., in the course of a long -and able speech, said : There is no question abroad or at home, no question political, and very, few sientifie,- which is not admirably discussed in the newspaper press of this country. Hie articles which appear in the 'newspapers,' compressed, into a short space, are the result of much reading and of much thought ; and we who have not much time on' our hands we . are all in this age pressed for time get by that mentis great results and a vast amount of thought, elabo rated, into what the .Lancashire manufacture! s wmld Cal the finished article. (Hear.) Depend -upon it, tire man who shuts his eyes to the con temporane'jus history of the newspapers is a man unfit to deal Vith the practical wants of society. (Cheers.) In speaking of newspapers it has always appeared to me that they might be much juore useful than they are, and I have a strong belief that ultimately we shall see in the'news j'Hpers a change which will, I think, tend to make tlu-in much safer instructors of the public, for this reason that the public wonld then more easily riid and accept what it now takes cum grano '.- At the present moment newspaper writers are anony mous. My belief is that for the 'mission w , public instruction that is a great disadvantage, f t puts on A par, in point of weight and authority , the most scrupulous and the most unscrupulous r"er--the.ost exact knd most inexact. Mr. Canning once held up two despatches writ ten to him by two of the most eminent diploma tists one of them resides in this neighborhood. lH)th were admirably written both showed great u;nvledge of the world, and a finished style of "?." Mr. Canniug beld them in his hand and - Mid, V Here are two despatches equally well writ-je--I have irot a fault to find with either of them, tl t great weight to this one and none to lat I know the character of the two men w ho rote them. Lit A KI-.ES, General Ac Agent, 4t Broadway, New' York: NAFORB'S I.IVEIl l.WIGORATOR. The Liter Jntigorator, Prepared by Dr Sanford, Compounded entirely from Guvis,' IS one of the beet Purgative and Liver Medicines now before the public, that acts as a Cathartic, easier, milder, and more effectual than any other medicine known. It is not only a Cathartic, but e Liver remedy, acting first on the Liver to eject its morbid matter, then on the stomach and bowela to-cany-off that matter, thus accomplishing two pur-' poses effectually, without any of the painful feehns experienced in the operations of motd Cathartics. It ; strengthens the system at the same time that it purges it; and 'w.hjen taken daily in moderate doses, willH strengthen jand build it up with unusual rapidity. 1 The Liver is one of the principal regulators of the human body; and when i performs it functions well the powers of the system are fully developed. The lomacn is almost entirely dependent on tne nealtny action of the Liver for the proper performance of its functions; when the stomach is at fault, the bowels are at fault, and the whole system suffers in conue- 3uence of one organ the Liver having ceased to ' o its duty. For the diseases of that organ, one et the proprietors has made it his study, in' a practict of more than twenty years, to find some remedy where- 7 with to counteract the many derangements to which it is liable. " ' To prove that this remedy is at last found, any person troubled with Liver Complaint, in any of its forms, has but to try a bottle, and conviction is cer-i--tain. These Gums remove all morbid or bad matter from the systeut, supplying in their place a healthy flow of bMe, invigorating the stomach, causing food to di- . gest well, purifying the blood, giving tone and health to the whole machinery ? removing the cause of the disease effecting a radical cure. Bilious attacks are cured, and, what is better, pre vented, by the occasional use of the Liver Invigora- tor. '' '','-" '--" One dose after eating is sufficient to relieve the stomach and prevent the food from rising and sour ing. .-'---''.' ' '-- .--' Only one dose taken before retiring, prevents Night mare.: - Only one dose taken at night, loosens the bowels gentlv. and cures Costiveness. One dose taken after each meal will cure, Dyspep- sia. "'..7 :" ' "' - - Oue dose of two teaspoonfuls will always relieve Sick Headache. : - , One bottle taken for female obstruction removes the cause of the disease, and makes a perfect ciire. i Only one dose immediately relieves Cholic, while One dose often repeated is" a sure cure for Clioltr Morbus, and a preventive of Cholera. Only one T bottle is needed to throw ont of the sys tem tfie effects of medicine after a long sickness, One bottle taken for Jaundice removes all sallow liens or unnatural color from the skin. One dose taken a short time before, eating gives ri gor to tlie appetite, and makes food digest well. . One dose often, repeated cures Chronic Diarhcea in its worst forms f while summer and Bowel complaints yield almost to the first dose. Oue or two doses-cures attacks caused by worms in. Children : there is ho surer, safer, or speedier reme dy in the world, as it never fails. "A few bottles cures Dropsy, by exciting the ab- . sorbents. We take pleasure in recommending this medicine as a preventitive for Fever and Ague, Chill Fever, and all Fevers of a bilious Type. It operates with certainty, and thousands are willing to testify to its wonderful virtues. - . ' All who use it are giving their unanimous testimony in its favor. ' r5" Mix Water in the mouth with the Invigorater, and swallow iKith together. - THE LIVER INVIG ORATOR Is a S ientific Medical Discovery, and is daily work ing cures, almost t great to believe. It cures as il by magic, even the first dose giving benefit, and sel dom more than one bottleis required to cure any kind of Liver Complaint, from the worst Jaundice or Dvs- .t pepsia to a common Headache, all of which are tne result of a Diseased Liver. The Publishers of Hariern New Monthly Msga zinc refer to the Sixteen Volumes already issued as the best assurance that no labor or expense will be spared to render it worthy of the liberal support whielv it has received. They believe that the Mag agine -now embraces in its general plnn every thine essential to an attractive literary mincellany, adapted to the wants of the American .Public. Its regular circulation has not been diinin'udied even during the unexampled financial revulsion, which has proved" disastrous to o many literary and commercial enter prises; and they, are assured from every quarter that the Magazine i recognized as a necessity rather than luxurv.
