In the Tlur tecnth ward are sold the most dangerous bever ages in town. A fewi week sinceTa man drank three cents worth of brandy, which proved fatal in tour hours. Hut somehow the law has failed to reach the matter. Capt. Steers having report ed a number of instances of liquor selling on the Sabbath, the court required such positive testi mony, relative to the character of the liquor and its sale, that the prosecutions failed. The Inspec tor of the Thirteenth precinct was determined not to De baffled by any device of magistrates, and took a plan to procure the most conclusive testi mony. He sent out policemen to report violations of the law, providing them with vials and when they saw anybody drink and pay for liquor, they took a portion of the same, put it in a vial, sealed it up, and marked on it the time and place of sale. These vials were taken by the Captain, to be handed to the court, for the jury to determine tlie character of their contents, whether camphejie or drinkable liquor.
