F:lowers. jln passing up Pollock Street yes terday we noticed the beautiful flower garden o: Mrs. De.wey's The . fine taste and skill disj played in ornamenting the grounds adjoining the residence 3is certainly creditable. Fruits and Vegetables. Our j market stalli yesterday seemed to groan under the weight o the large quantities of fruits Vand vegetables with which they were filled. We noticed whor4 tleberriee, strawberries, plums, cherries, apples and a list of vegetables of every variety, j Caution. As it is now the season for hucklel berries, we would caution our citizens when ....... purchasing them to note well if the poisonous gallberry is not mixed with them. j; The gall- berry resembles veiy much ini form and color. the huckleberry, and careful inspection should be given m order to prevent serious results. Effects m Ball Playing. A. young gentle man of our acquaintance, with one eye, two tuibroken legs, several uncracked ribs and the fingers of one hand pointing in several direc tions, appeared in our office yesterday, and de sired us to notice the fact that the Elm City ... . . , . ., i . . 1 Club would soon piay anotner ma ten game a Base Ball. We viewed our young informant with wonderland simply smiled, j" RuNAWAT.-7-Yesterday morning wmie our fellow-citizen, Mr. T. S. Howard, was taking a drive, the pony attached to his buggy became frightened, and dashing down South Fron Street, suddenly turned the corner at the inter section of Miidle Street, and threw Mr. Howard out of the vehicle to the i ground. We are glad to learn that beyond a few scratches and sligh bruises, Mr. H. sustained no injury. i notice that a subscription Iki is being circulated for the purpose of funds to. repair and paint the M. E. Church and fence. These repairs are much needed, and as the outlay of money will necessarily be large, it is to be hoped that all our citizens will aid in the worthy object. Cotton. We noticed on yesterday several vehicles laden with cotton from the country, and that a considerable quantity of this staple also arrived by water from Hyde, county. We learned from Mr. Wm. G. Bryan, weigher and inspector, that the best quality was quoted in this market at 154 cents. Mayor's CotrnT. A complaint was made be fore His Honor by Phillip Wiggins, charging one Mrs. Haugh with making an assault upon his wife and disturbing the peace and quiet of the neighborhood. Th disturbance appeared to have been occasioned by the children of the re- Jspective families, and after a reprimand all the parties were dismissed. Fish. Notwithstanding the extreme warmth of the weather, there appears to be no dimuni tion in the supply of our fish market. Among the varieties offered for sale, we noticed flound ers, spots, jack-fish, mullets, red-fins, drums, Welshman, rock, white perch, shad, trout, rob bins, bull-heads, etc.- -V Ice Cream. The ladies connected with .the M. E. Sewing Society, will hold an ice cream sociable at the American House this (Wednesday) evening. (N)ice cream, lemonade and cake, to gether with the presence of the fair ladies, will present such an attraction as no young man should resist. The object in view in - raising money by this t means is a worthy one, and money invested now for cooling purposes wiU, most probably, next winter, be the means of warming some of the destitute poor of the city. w '' I to meet at the Court Mouse on Tnursoay even ing, 11th inst;, for the purpose of appointing delegates to the County Convention, and trans acting such other business as may properly come before them. Every Conservative in the Township is expected to be present. By order of the Committee. Seth M. Carpenter, Chairman. T. A. Green, Secretary. Refreshing, A grateful drink may be easily prepared from lemons which can be kept for use during these warm and sultry summer days, by removing all the pulp from the peels, and boil them in water; in proportion of i. pint for a dozen pulps, to extract the acid. Boil a few minutes, then strain the liquid and put a pound of white sugar to a pound of juice Boil all ten minutes and bottle. A teaspoonful of this lemon pyrup in a glasss of water makes a cool and re freshing drink. A. & N. C. Railroad. Our Sunday's issue contained an article in relation to this concern, in which we stated that we had been reliably informed that the Board of Directors had allowed EJ R. Stanly, its late President to draw his sal ary from the time he was dispossessed of the office till the first of July. Yesterday afternoon we were assured by one of the Directors that this was incorrect: that the salary was drawn without the knowledge or consent of ; the Board, and that at its yesterday's session, the Board authorized President King ' Co take legal, or such other steps as might be necessary for the rfiftoverv of the monev. We make this state ment in justice to the Directors. Little Giant." In speaking of the work ins of this excellent fire extinguisher, the Char lotte Observer, of June 3rd, says: The test of the 'Little Giant Chemical Engine took place yesterday evening in the presence of the Mayor, Aldermen and a number of citizens. The pile operated upon was made of forty-three rosin barrels and two tar barrels, each filled with pine shavings. The mass was 6et on fire and in fp.w momenta was comtletelv enveloped in flames. Then the engine began playing on it, and in an incredibly short time the flames were entirely extinguished, xne mass was again, lg nited. and in about two minutes was again ex tinguished. Those capable of judging, say that the author has succeeded admirably in his plan, and recommend the book to all teachers and students. -I1 .' j l A. L. Barnes & Co., New York,! send us IhmUiar Lessons in Botany, with Flora of Texas, adapted to general use in the Southern States, by Mrs. M. J. Young. The author of this book tells us frankly she claims no merit for origi nality in her work, .being a mere gleaner on other lands, gathering into one garner sheaves cut by Chapman, Buckley, Grey and others; but her work is none the less valuable, as most bot anies, are either too scientific or too simple, while these lessons combine simplicity j with some degree of technical and scientific knowl edge! Her "Flora of Texas" embraces the whole Southwest, as well as the Gulf States, and it is the first full - one that has been given for the use of schools. The style is clear and simple, and the book a collection of interestin facts, not a mere dry record of names. . " .. M. B. C. BY LAST NIGHT'S MAIL.
