We call the attention of the Conservative editors in this State to the fact that ... the white men of this county desire that they should publish in their respective journals the proceedings of our County Con vention. Most of the papers were called, but the list being so large it was determined to in corporate them under one general head. The eleven hundred and forty-six white men of this county, who cast their votes in every election against such fearful odds, expect this favor at the hands of their brethren in more favored lo calities, so that the people throughout the State may know the spirit which animates them. C H O I O JEZ GROCERIES AT C. E. SLOVAK'S, f Thb CoNVBsnoit Ybstebd At. Although the Conservative Convention yesterday was' not as largely attended as we had hoped, yet those who were present evinced an enthusiasm wich we have rarely seen equalled and never surpassed, and a determination to use every effort to suc ceed in August next The gentlemen who. ad dressed the Convention did so in a manner cal culated to arouse the people to the true issue in this contest, viz: the formation of a white man's party in this State in opposition to the negro party. ' Questions of finance and taxes, mo mentous as they are," said they, "are ' of but little importance compared with this great one of social equality sought to be forced upon us by the negro party." It is impossible for us to do justice to their remarks, and' we shall not attempt it The speeches of the two young gentlemen nominated for the House , of Repre sentatives, in accepting the honor, showed that the committee had acted wisely in their selec tion, and convinced all who heard them that the honor of the Conservative cause in Craven County is placed in no unworthy hands. That they will work for its success, there is no doubt, Altogether, we are well satisfied with yesterday's work, and predict that good results will follow. Subscribe for the Newbernian, $5.00 per year. Voluminous. Dick King, the accidental Pres ident of the Atlantic & N. C. R. R., was heard on Thursday last, to remark in substance as fol lows:. That he did not know how it was that he should have been fool enough to' offer $25,000 to have Carpenter whipped, when in Lenoir County he had often had better men whipped for 30 cents apiece and the county stood half the expense. . ; While we have no doubt that Dick King has caused many a better man . than himself to be whipped, we certainly have a doubt as to his honesty and courage. We think Dick King not only a very large sized fcoan, but a very large sized coward, and from certain reports (which we intend to investigate,) that have recently come to our ears, we believe him to be not only large in volume, large in cowardliness, but large in dishonesty. If Dick King has the confidence of any mortal acquaintance who will undertake to whip us upon the strength, of his $25,000 offer, we hope that confiding-mortal will make his appearance at an. early hour; and while we do not now posses the wherewith to leave, so large a sum in our will, we would be willing in case we should have it at our demise, to be queath unto him also an equal sum with the bold (?) Dick, provided the confiding mortal aforementioned should accomplish the thing to the satisfaction of his voluminous employer, Richard W. King. - Conservative County Convention. The Democratic-Conservatives of Craven, met at the Court House yesterday morning and were called to order by James E. Morris, Esq., Chairman of the County Executive Committee, who called Col. H. T. Guion to the Chair, and, on motion, S. M. Carpenter and Henry C. Pool, Esqrs., were appointed Secretaries. ; ; Col. Guion on taking the Chair explained the object of the meeting, and addressed the Con vention in a short, earnest speech j of about ten minutes. On motion of Maj. In this story, the author shows all the grace, humor, and quaint description that have made him our great American story-teller. Both old and young will be delighted with the curious and laughable fortunes of the hero, who is one of the most absurdly charming characters Bret Harte ever drew. "Baby Sylvester " has been admirably illustrated by W. L. Sheppard and Jas. C. Beard, and is certain to produce a lite rary sensation. Mr. Edward King, in his forthcoming article on Missouri, in the 44 Great South" 'Series' of Scribner's Monthly, calls Missouri the ' Heart of the Republic." The article will appear in the July number. Fanny Hodgson Burnett, the talented young writer, recently married, - wnose nome is in Tennessee; will have a story, "The Fire! at Grantley Mills," in Scribner for July. Mrs. Burnett will be remembered as the author of Surly Tim's Trouble's," a story written in the Lancashire Dialect, which appeared in Scribner's Monthly and which has become famous among readers on the Platform.
