I Regardlcssoi'tho inclement weath er Saturday a" large number of the "untcrrified" of Wilkes were on hand Saturday to attend the Demo cratic county convention. Before going into convention a caucus was held and the situation discussed. Chairman K. N. Hackett called the convention to order, and asked T. B. Finley to occupy the chair with It. A. Deal and T. J. Robertson as secretaries the temporary organ ization was made permanent. Dr. Tyre York and J. Gordon Hackett were nominated for the House of Representatives by accla mation. For Clerk of Court there were three candidates, but Dr. A.J. Filer secured the nomination. For Register of Deeds W. A. Bui was nominated by acclamation. Vance McGhinnis was nominated for Survcj'or, and D. M. Hall for Coroner. When it came to selecting candi dates for Commissioners, it was realized that there were several men in the county well qualified for this position and the candidates were numerous. However, it was decid ed to nominate onlv two and after casting several ballots Wesley Joincs and J. E.- Burch were selected. The executive committee was then authorized to fill any vacancies on the ticket that might occur. The following resolution was in troduced and adopted: "Resolved, that we, the Democrats of Wilkes county in convention as sembled, endorse C. B. Watson, for United States Senator. In him we recognize an honest man a true Democrat, who in 189C made the race for Governor when defeat was certain, and who in the dark days from 18G1 to 1865 fought with the boys in the ranks on Virginia soil, and who if elected will be the only Contederate soldier in the 58th Con gress from North Carolina." Hon. Jas. II. Pou was presented and made a short but Bpicy talk. In his inimitable manner he ridiculed the Republican party unmercifully. Came Near Being a Cripple. Josh Westhafer, of Looootec, Ind., is a poor man, but he says he would not be without Chamber lain's Pain Balm if it cost live dollars a bottle, for it saved him from being a cripple.
