Davis and family left for Ashevillo Wednesday to isit relatives. Go out and hear Capt. Henry to night. It will make you take more pride in your town. The Blue Ridge Institute closes today with a grand picnic by the school and its patrons. Mr. T. G. Kilby has sold his pro perty at Millers Creek and will in vest in North Wilkesboro. Mr. J. L. Young has moved into h's handsome new residence which was but recently completed. , North Wilkesboro can't afford to miss this opportunity to secure wa ter works register and vote for it. Go early and avoid a rush remem ber the excursion leaves in the morn ing at G o'clock. Better securo your ticket today. Mr, W. B. Henry is in Dan bury this week. He has the contract to manufacture the brick for Stokes county's new court house. Little Turner, one of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. William's twins, died Friday night and was buried Saturday. The parents have the sympathy of a host of friends. A series of meetings will begin at the Baptist church Sunday morn ing. Pastor Bradshaw will be as sisted by Rev. L. I. Pruett, of Char lotte, who will arrive Monday. Mrs. Mary Church died at her home near Millers Creek on Thurs day afternoon of last week of apo plexy. She was 62 years old and leaves one child. The remains were laid to rest at Purlear Saturday. Be sure and see that your name is on the regular registration book of the town. If you have only reg istered for the special election which was held in February, it will be no good. Remember the book closes tomorrow. Saturday was a rush day for Sher iff Johnson and many "stepped for ward." Tl ere are only about four hundred delinquent poll taxes in the county. Many of them waited for their friends to "step forward" but they refused to "step" and quite right. Those who are inclined to love gunning are preparing to organize a gun club. There are some pretty good shots here and tho "boys" can get up a team with a little practice that will be hard to beat. The or ganization will no doubt be perfect ed in a few days. Capt. Henry, manager of the Winston Water Works, will address the people of North Wilkesboio in New Era Hall this evening at 8:30 o'clock on the advantages and cost of water works and sewerage. All are most cordially invited to come out and hear him it will, pay you to do so. The first term o f Wilkesboro Graded School closed Wednesday night and a largo crowd was pres ent to witness the exercises, which were greatly enjoyed the little folks acquitted themselves in a most admirable manner, reflecting credit alike on themselves and their teach ers, Prof. Horney and Misses Starr, Egbert and Bell. News reached hero Tuesday of a bad cutting (-crape in Alleghany near the Wilkes line in which one man wart killed and another may die. From what we can learn it seems that George and Hillary Key were chasing the sheep of Freeland John son with dogs. Johnson got hisgun and went out to investigate. A quarrel ensued when he fired twice at George Key, who ran, none of the shots taking effect. Hillary Key ran up to Johnson and grabbed the gun and tried to wrest it fiom him. In the struggle each drew a kndii and began using it. Hillary Key was disemboweled and died, wbil Johnson was cut so badly that tho attending physician saj-s he cannot live. Wilkes the Place August Fourth. Tho Eighth Congressional Demo cratic executive committee mcb in Wilkesboro Wednesday for the pur pose of selecting a time and plat e for holding the convention. All the members were pesent except from Stanly and that was represented by proxy. After discussing the matter thor oughly it was decided best to hold tho convention on the 4th day ol August. The question of place then came up. II. Church, tax collector, 1902; F. C. Forester, 1903; license taxes, light rents bince December 1st, 1903, $2,G4S 82. Paid out for street work, material, electric plant rents, salaries sanitary work, police salaries, printing state ment, election notices, town ordi nances, oflice rent, etc ; treasurer's commissions, and balance in treas urer's hands, $2,G48.S2. Outstanding registered claims unpaid and unpaid interest on bonds, 398.74; same items last year, $7G5. 50. Taxes yet due town and in process of collection, less liabilities, $335 8G. Flesh Fell From Bones. A Lura Ya., special says: Cleve land Jefferson, an employe of Smoot's tannery, at Sperryville, accidental ly fell into a large tank of boiling grease, his whole body being sub merged. He managed to crawi out of the tank when the flesh began to fall from his bones. His fellow work men procured a barrel of cold water, into which Jefferson was placed, and in this he was carried to his home some distance away. He died soon after reaching that point. C. S. Privette, lumber & nails for bridges, $10.20; J. C. Mitchell, . services as small pox guard, $16.50; J. E. Dun can, services as small pox guard $20.00; F. M. Adams, services as county commissioners from April 1st to May 2d, inclusive, $7.40; L. C Jennings, services as county com missioner, $11.10; L. C. Jennings for boarding and keeping Felix Tid line for April, $3 33; L. C. Jennings services and expenses in attending to Bond matter at Greensboro in March, 1904, $15.65; D. R. Edwards services as county commissioner for 2d quarter, 1904, $10.00; J. H.John son, services as jailer for April, $36, 95; Drs. Ring & Reece, services in attending family of J. F. Mastin while afflicted with small pox, $8.00 S. W. Cockerbam & Son, goods fur nished J F. Mastin's family during small pox scare, $10.95. The following were declared, pan pers and allowed per month the amount following their names Adam Wood $2.00, tho little do formed boy of Asa McGrady $1 00; Delpha Porter $1.50. Callie Eller was ordered admitted lo the poor house. . The following were exempted from the payment of poll tax: J. O. Wad dill, Andrew Bros., C, H. Warren"; W, G. Eller. C. I). Holbrook, was appointed inx lister for Trap Hill township in of R. D. Hanes, and T. MCry m 1 in the place of C. U. Davis in 'Wilkesboro township. Hotel Gordon was refunded $5,50 tax erroneously charged. Alexander Church was refunded $3 30 poll tax erroneously charged to him. Dr. J. M. Turner was appointed a number of the county board of health to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Doughton, deceased. The former order exempting from the payment of poll tax G. A. Wheat ley, of Rock Creek, and J. N. Revis, of Union, wa9 rescinded. L. C. Jennings and J. A. Forester were appointed to examine the road from Davis' gate to Marley's ford and also examine the new road made by L. E. Davis and report condition at next meeting. $4 33 was added to the tax of E. F. Roberts, of Somers township, the same having been erroneously omit ted from the tax books. Old Confederates Fast Dying Out. State Auditor Dixon says that while heretofore from $2,000 to $2,- 500 of pension money has been an nually uncalled for, because of the death of pensioners he thinks this year at least $4,000 will be uncalled for. He made out warrants for $202,000 on account of pensions, bo- cause he knew that quite a number of pensioners would die and the amounts would not be called for, but the warrants would be returned.
