TUESDAY, NOVKMBKR 17, 1914 In thin issue of Ihe Hustler is printed an intemized statement of the finances of the town of North Wilkes boro. Look over it. Henry Varner's newspaper has moved into a house of its own after getting over eighteen years old and heralds itself with a big electric sign at night. The Asheville Citizen says that lawyers say the court docket there is in better shape now than it has been twenty-six years. Good, for the new system we hope. Lawyers can be overburdened as well as other folks. The State Farmers Union meats in Greenville this week and Mr. A. ti. Hendivn anil others will attend from this county. The Progressive Far mer says the Union has done a liig work this year and is stronger in North Carolina than anywhere else in America. Charles D. 1 lilies, chairman of the national Republican committee, an nounces that the call for their nation al convention in 1916 will be on the new basis which reduces their repre sentation in the convention eighty nine votes. Most of this loss falls upon the Southern Republicans of which North Carolina Republicans is to lose three. True Meaning Not Known, by the Masses, Morgnnton Burku NewM-Ufnikt. From the tabulated report of last week's electian in Burke appearing in this insue of The News-Herald it will be seen that the amendments lost in this county by a vote of about 3 to 1 we are sorry to record. It is generally conceded that the reason they lost here (and this condition seems to have been general through out the State) was that their true meanings and purposes were notthor oughlv understood by the great mass es of the people , Mr. Bailey says that his campaign committee had only $250 with which to conduct the campaign and that it would have required $3,200 in post age alone to send a letter to the vot ing public of North Carolina. So his campaign was necessarily largely con fined to the newspapers which he says did magnificent work, but that 30 davs was all too short within which to work up sentiment without more; direct effort. This October 12, 1914. A. P. Hall. Administrator. abo it a great many public questions ! that come up, but be assured, beloved, when we look around for some one to lead us, we pick a man who works in life for something more than his own selfish interest. If we are going to be a follower, the leader must be a nian. who seeks the highest welfare of the community in which he lives and who has in the past stood for those things that proved to be best for the people at large. Optimistic About L. Bumgarner. Dnvle Record, Srcl. We might remark in passing that Mr. Bumgarner, of Wilkes, our Sena ter in the 28th enatorial district, was elected by the usual majority of between two and three thousand. Frank D.
