The New York Journal of Commerce says business is al ready showing the benefit of stop ping tariff agital ion; on all sides active preparations are in prog rcss for resuming operations on a more active 6cale. The stock market began anticipating the settlement fully two weeks ago. A much more yaluable indication of the condition pf general busi ness is the demand for money, which is greater than it has been and indicates" a" considerable in crease in -. mercantile' activity. , There has been some demand for money for payment "of . taxes on whiskey; the withdrawal of im ported goods . from ' bond at the " n i in . '" 1- ' ? ' new raies oi uuty win not ' uegiu till the bill becomes alaw, but the payment of duties' of duties at the Custom House-already in creased perceptibly The larger offerings of commercial; paper give evidence of the. confidence with which merchants rcgajd the immediate future. Last year .there was much desire to obtain money, but the banks had, none ; now ther have nlentv. and there has been a slight demand for it. So. far; the effect, in the dry goods market has been to create a much more hopeful feeling in the do mestic goods department and in the jobbing trade, and while there ia no expectation of a boom, there are many indications of a better tone and an increapsd demand; nno of which is flia presence of - i an unusual number of buyers in the city. The lawful execution of a ne gro criminal at GrahamJ N. C, on Friday last wa9 very much moro impressive than the lynch ing of him would have been, says the New York ' Sun. Some of tho enraged people wanted lynch law in his case, but better coun sel prevailed. The Governor or dered a special term for the trial of the criminal, who was arraign ed, convicted and sentenced in two hours. His execution was public and in the presence of 8 OOO spectators. 'The whole of tho procedure aa laTy -JwA; and creditablo to tho officers of the State. It was an example to Texas and Iowa, Alabama and Ohio. There can be no good reason for any case of lynching in any State in the Union. It is really encouraging to see how. fast tho different manufact uring enterprises all over the United States are starting up and resuming work. They arc re Burning as rapidly as they shut down. Tho passage of the tariff bill ha3 and will have a wonder ful influence on tho different in dustries, even if it is not exactly what was desired. Anything is better than uncertainty. Senator Gorman's health is a source of great concern to him. It is said tho Senator has Bright's disease, and just as soon as Con gress adjourns he will probably go abroad, stopping at one ot the German watering resorts and place his case in the hands of some noted specialist. ' Alabama gavo Oatcs 20,000 majority. Locks as though tho Pops were not in it very exten sively. Bat that' is always the oai mnrrt Tvftrlr liftn T?rr The New York "World classes Senator Gorman as the Jesse James of the Scnfitc. lie is great on "hold ups." Let the Democrats of North Carolina get together and run up a score in November equal to that of Alabama. . One hundred Coxeyites were pardoned at Baltimore last Fri day. The two leaders were re tained. It is rumored that Secretary Carlisle. will resign. ' m NORTH CAROLINA. rOLITICS. The . Henderso'nville Register (Rep) calls Chairman John B. Eaves the Uriah HeCp . of the Republican party. The Oxford Ledger says that the Granville county Democratic convention will not meet till the midd le of September. Tho Greensboro Record says that the Guilford county Demo cratic convention will likely be called about the middle of Sep tember. The Democrats of the Twenty sixth Senatorial district will meet in Lexington on Thursday the 13 of September to nominate two candidates for the Senate. The Republicans of New Han over county will hold a conven tion on the 25th "of August to consider, among other things, whether to nominate a county ticket or not. Tho Pops in Mecklenburg are weakening at a great rate says the Charlotte News.- Some of the prominent ones have only declared their intention to vote the Democratic out. ticket straight '- Dr. Lea, of Caswell; Hannibal Simpson, of Rockingham, and Rev. Mr. Massey, of Durham, arc talked of as the Populist candi dates for Congress. Mr. Massey seems to be in the lead as a can didate. The Democratic convention of the Second Senatorial district will be held in Plymoth on "Wed nesday the 29th day of August, for the. purpose of nominating" two candidates to represent said district in the Senate of North Carolina. Tom Settle was renominated for-Congress at the' Fifth Con gressional convention at Greens boro On ;"Wednesday of last week. 'It was expected that Rufus Amis would be nominated but his name was not put before the conven tion and Settle was nominated by acclamation. WHAT TItET THINK OF IT, ' This seems to .be tho bet that could be done at th present time, as the Senate is at present constituted. Atlanta Constitu tion. There is this further compensa tion for the humiliating result: It will relieve the country, for some years t least, of the fear of another general tarifjUipheaval. New York "World. "While it is not by any means what the country wanted, there is a universal case of relief at the removal of the, uncertainty which has paralyzed many lines of in dustry and affected evety line of business. Atlanta Journal. In passing the Senate tariff the House of Representatives has only yielded to the sternest neces sity, the alternative of which was the continuance of the infamous and far more oppressive and far moro ruinous McKinley law. New York Herald. Ex-Governor Thomas M. Holt has given an order for a statute of Major Joseph "Winston, to be erected on Guilford Battle Ground. The figure, which will be made of bronze, will represent a major of the Continental line in full uniform; and tho drawn sword will rest the right hand making the position easy and soldierlike. the oli xonrii state. ewn Items Gathered frwtii nil Sec tlon Since Oar Innt Inane. During the month of July over 400 hogsheads of tobacco were shipped from "Wilson. During the severe electrical storm of Wednesday, which seems to have been general over the State, a colored woman was killed by lightning at Magnolia, Duplin county i as was also one near San ford, Moore county. , The Newton Enterprise says that watermelons are so plentiful this summer and prices arc so very low there that some persons hauling them to town have pre ferred to take them back home and feed them to their pigs.' The Newborn Journal says the seaside season is practically over. The Atlantic Hotel, Morehead City, now has something less than a hundred guests, and will close the first Df next month. The season, has been a fairly good and profitable one. ' Hog cholera, or something like it, is raging in this section, says the Sampson Democrat. Hogs that seem to be well this evening are found dead next morning. The rapid fatality of the disease is puzzling. Some people have lost nearly all their hogs. Tho old man Johnson,, who swindled several preachers in Charlotte last July, has been found guilty of forgery- and sen tenced to five years in the peni tentiary. Johnson is 6aid to be a genteel looking old man. By means of forged credentials he ob tained sums of money from vari ous preachers. The Charlotte News says that great quantities of blockade whis key arc stored in the warehouses in that city and that there is a rush to get it out of "bondage" before the new tariff Jaw cocs in to effect. Under the old law the "release" is 90 cents per gallon; but under the new law it will be $1.10. The Landmark says that-a three-room framo cottage in the ,westcrn suburbs of Statesville, owned and occupied by Mr. "W. H. Stockton, was burned with its contents about 5 o'clock Thurs day morning. The family was away . from home.. The house, was insured for $-100 and the fur niture for $600, . All manner of troubles beset the path of the small boy. The Enterprise says that little J air es Moose, who lives just south of Newton, while trying to get on some stilts last Sunday morning, fell and broke one of the small bones in his arm. But he would not have done it if he had been at Sunday school. The Globe savs that one of the visitors at the culoied firemen's association at Durham attempted wtale there to put the old bills of he Bank of Mecklenburg into circulation. He succeeded in passing about $12, $5 on Mose Ray, 2 on a colored boy and $5 on a man whose name could not be learned. The police were on the lookout for the scamp, but he evidently learned they were after him and skipped. I ho man who has an appetite tor glory will never get enough of it to make him fat. TOTE 1IGHT!
