Until all peace ful, lawfully, ordained means are exhaust ed, let us not think of anything else. In struct the public mind wait, and when the timecomes, actlike men. Asheville Pioneer. It is evident that our co temporary docs not understand the position of Tite Era. The Republican party is the only party of law and order known to Amer ican politics. It does not countenance lawlessness or the use of the- military arm of the government, except in the most extreme cases, where the civil authorities have failed or neglected to enforce the law. If Judge Merrimon decides to con test the election, a declaration of such intent, will ensure the support of the Democratic members. Their minds will be made up before the investiga tion begins ; and the production of ev idence showing the grossest fraud on the part of Democrats and Liberal traitors, will be a farce equally as great as the impeachment trial of Gov. IIol dcn. Political necessity and the party lash, will secure a decision favorable - to Judge Merrimon, no matter what evidence may be produced by Gov. Caldwell and his friends. Such wo believe will be the action of the Legislature if the election is con tested; and believing that Gov. Cald well and his brethren elect, received more than two- thousand majority :of the legal votes cast on the first day of August last; and believing that the election if contested will beaarw, we "advised Gov. Caldwell that it would be his duty to retain possession of the State government ; and if Judge Mer rimon should see fit to set up a petty government, in that case the Congress would be called upon to decide which is the lawful government. Thus far we have advised peaceable measures; but, if the State government is to be wrested from Gov. Caldwell because of an adverse decision of a parti zan Leg islature, in that event, we advised the Governor to maintain possession of the government by peaceable means if pos sibleat the point of the bayonet if nec essary. If a majority of ttco thousand can be nullified by the Legislature, any ma jority may be whenever unscrupulous lenders demand and inaugurate a con test. Imnortant as it is. the question who shall be Governor, i3 as a mole-hill compared to Mt. Mitchell, when we consider the effects of overthrowing a legal majority of two thousand, .'votes, and that by a majority of the Legisla ture, who were elected by a' 'minority of the votes of the State. ' ' It is the precedent that wo' object to : tho absolute nullification of the will of the people as expressed at the ballot box, not for the high and noble pur pose of purifying elections, but for party advantage. It is to be regretted that politics has become so degraded that it is utterly impossible for a political opponent to obtain justice at the hands of the oppo site party ; and for this reason we en tertain the opinion that the initiative step toward contesting the election, is equal to a decision declaring Merrimon elected; and despairing of anything like justice at the hands of the Legisla ture, we advised Gov. Caldwell to maintain possession of the Government by peaceable means if possible by the bayonet as the dernier resort. In -this position we think we are sustained by a large majority of the Republican "party. Good Opportunity. The following letter, addressed to Hon. W. A. Smith, Congressman elect for this District, explains itself. Maj. Smith may be addressed at Boon Hill, N. C, upon the subject.
