An Appeal to Colored Voters. BY FREDERICK DOUGLASS. Washington, August 9, 1872. COIORED' FELIX) W-CITIZEN3 : ' In view of tho insidious and dangerous advice and counsel of Mr. Sumner. I think it is my duty to set forth a few urgent reasons why we, as a race and as feliow-citbsens. all bound up in the same interest, cannot and should not vote for Greeley and Brown, but that to a man we should cast our . whole weicrht into tho scale for Grant land Wilson. 1st. We in the South have been lib crated from slavery by the direct agency of the Republican party. Had Grcelev been President instead of Lin coin, we wou Id-io-day- have- brnJn n wurse ixjnaage unaer me oiavo Atepuu He of the Southern Confederate States than ever before. Greeley advocated - this policy, and did his best to estab lish the. Republic of which slavery ;,wa3 to bo the chief corner-stone, ' 2nd. Our first vote was cast as f reed- men for Grant In 1868. Have we been disatrpointed in the result of his ad ministration ? Previous to that period you had no vote. lVow we nave equal rights (or almost equal rights) with' the white race. We can accumulate property as they do; we have the law's protection over us as they have ; our marital relations are respected ; our wives and children are our own and not the property of others : we can testify in every court; we have the right if we have the power to have our brethren elected to the Senate and Con gress or the country : we are a power that is felt: we hold the balance of I power In America; no corrupt orvas- cillating man can be elected to the Presidential chair unless we consent to vote "for him. 3rd. All this has occurred since I860, and chiefly since we cast our vote for Grant in 1863. Are we prepared to risk the abandonment .of these great privileges and blessings, and vote for a man who believes that any State may diS"olve from the Union when she sees fit, or pass such laws as may seem to her best ? Are we prepared to vote for , the nominees or the Democratic party, whose hearts never have changed to ward us, who kept us in. slavery as long as they had the power, and who if they had the power again would (to say the least of it) do their very utmost to restrict our liDerties ana oppress us a3 of old. Mr. Sumner may deceive himself; he cannot deceive us: or, to - use the lancruase of the gentleman. Mr. James K. lioolittle, Chairman of . the Convention which nominated Mr. Greeley, one of the objects of the nom ination being the 11 overthrow of negro supremacy." And forsooth, what' is this supremacy they so much wish to A ATrtrKAw9 T4-: I mil 1 1 flTl ' t fm 1 Am .lAtifin of those ordinary .privileges and -'"' blessings enumerated in clause second. We have no supremacy, ana never ex pect to have, nor intend to try for. 4th. In conclusion : Be not deceived! With Grant, our security i3 unques tionable ; our happiness will be made lasting. With Greeley, we would en ter upon a sea of trouble an unknown and anxious future. Unscrupulous ad visers would be hi3 friends. Our old foes would surround him. as they even do now : and even if a few stanch friends should endeavor to stem the coming troubles, they would be swept away with the torrent, and the great work , of the Republican party would prove an abortion. It cannot be that we will send one vote out ofour entire midst to bring about such dire results, ana 1 pray God that when the time comes everv man of our race will be found true to the cause of human rights to all. Frederick Douglass. , Vico-Prosldeiit A, H. Steplions' Report and Opinion of Gen. Grant. A. H. Stephens, while Vice-Presi dent of the Southern Confederacy, met Gen. Grant at Hampton Roads, in Vir ginia. and he gives his impression of Gen. G. in his book. "War between the States," vol. 2, page 597, as follows: "I was instaiitly struck with the great simplicity and perfect natural ness of his manners, and the entire ab- Kpnpft of evervthing like affection. show, or even military air or mien of men in his position. There is nothing in his appearance or surround- His conversation was easy and fluent, without the least effort or re straint. In this nothing was so closely noticed bv me as the point and terse ness which he expressed whatever he said. . "He did not seem either to court or avoid conversation, but whenever he did speak, what he said was directly to the no int. and covered the whole matter in a faw words. I 6aw before I was with him long that he was exceed ingly quick in perception, anaaireci in purpose, with a vast deal more brains than tongue, as ready as that wm at hi mmmand. The more I became acquainted with him the more I became thoroughly impress ed with the very extraordinary . com bination of rare elements of character which he exhibited. nUpon the whole, the result of . this, first ac quaintance with Gen. Grant 1 : :? was the conviction on my mind that, taken all in all, he was one of tho most re markable men I had met, witbtand that his career in life, if his daya should be nrolonfred. was- hardly entered unon: that he. himself, was not aware, hi nnwpr. and that if he .Jwed he would, in the future, exert a controll ing Influence in shaping the destinies of this1 country, ei ther for good or for evil. .Which ft would be, time and cir cumstances alone could disclose." Mr. Wm.' Hamstead," a' gentleman connected with tho United -States ma rine service, is reported .engaged to Miss Ida Jreeley, eldest daughter of the saintly Chapaqua, the marriage to take place soon. Miss Greeley wanted to wait until she could speak of. the White House as "the residence of the bride's father," but William wouldn't be Jilted in that way. . - .- ' ' Sweetening one's coffee is generally we nrst stirring ovent of the day.
