General plans for the gunboats authorized by Congress ia the naval' act for this- -year were agreed npon by the naval board of con struction today. Each vessel will be of about 1,000 tons displacemient 'and wil greatly resemblo the- Marietta -and the Wheeling. The draft -will be 12 feet. The armament will be extremely strong for snch small ships, the main battery, Hike that of the Marietta and 'Wheeling, Holden. J. II. John- consisting of six four inch rapid fire runs. The limit of cost for each, vessel ia $3S2O00. $ people of the surrounding country. Their work does not end with yesterday s sales. The market ia established firmly plant ed on business principles, with business ssen behind It .the interests of the firmer will be looked af.er. City and conn try ara brought closer together the bonds of a reunion that means in creased prosperity for both. The resolu of the dar's sales briefly summed ui are as follows: At the Farmers Warehouse III farmers had nnloaded tobacco estimated at about 35.0UO pounds. This n.aanjrty of tobacco waa in piles. ' The' highest price ibtained at the Farmers was for a f tobacco sold by Messrs. Tllley & Blalock of Willow Springs for 32 cent; Der pound. The next highest was naia t Twh.m jfe Knlrbt who recelted 21 rents per poand. Thee gentlemen are from near 3!ilburnie. The arcraje waa I bout 9 cents per oand. v At the Capital City Warehouse 1 farmers had unloaded tobacco estimated between 40.000 and 50.000 pounds, dis tributed la 3G3 piles. The hianest price paid at th! warehouse was 28 cents to Mr. R. J. Smith, next 17J cents. to Mr. B, E. Young. Average price at th Capital City about 0& cents. At both warehouses there waa heaTy work and some consequent delay in get ting bills all made out and checks !s oed. A3 sellers were, however, well pleased and- aay they are coming back" again. The total number of pounds soil" at both warehouses is above 80.000. It fa regarded as a bl: opening. The buyers were alert and eagef and as pfe after pile of th yellow weed was rapidly passed and the price marked on, the tag the sellers who were cloely following smtfed their satisfaction. The sal waa a Lie success, a monu mental success, and it marks a new era ta the business history of the city. The selling began about 11 o'clock in the Farmers' Warehouse o? which Messrs. Cheatham A Mitchell are proprietors. It ws a thrilling scene. Whafwill the prices be? This Question was asked anj discussed by groups of farmers who were here to try the new market for the Crst time. Auctioneer Rice said that Mr. Frank Stronajh would make the opening announcement. Mr. Stronach mounted a bis pile of tobacco ani said: " Ladles and gentlemen and farmers or North Carolina: I announce the opening f the Raleigh tobacco market tojay and declare to you that it win be rnn on the principle of fair dealing and all esure you as high prices as can be had Jn North Carolina. If yon have any complaint at any time all we atk Is chat you come to us with It and it win be rectified." : Then the ball began to roll. The first f ile waa offered and old, the lond and clear vole of the auctioneer causing the skylights to quiver, while the silent nods of the buyers were sandwiching each ether and Frank Gtronach's voice waa beard above sverything eke "whooping It trp. When the sales were finished at tho Farmers' Warehouse an ; Intermission was taken for one hour to get lunch and Mr. Ftronach said to let the auctioneer get a long breath. At two o'clock the sales began at the Capital Otty Warehouse of which Messrs. Cannady ft Knott are proprie tors. Here the same stirring and en thusiastic performance waa gsne through again. The tobacco sold yes terday was from six counties Wake, rhathara, Durham. OranTCle, Franklin ind Johnston. Those selling at the Farmers' Ware Vou were: . Ino. F. Farrar. J. F. LaasUer, W. n. Vt.
