N. Oi Sent. 4.-AwW The question of water rates is oausinr a great many people to make inquiries. Some time ago the board of -Dubllc woifea pawisned a schedule of rates which seema not to give Terr general aatds- faction. These ranee all th -arsw trtvm 4j cents per cubic foot to 30 cents per cubic foot and therein lies the cause ox the troubia. It is claimed if -the city can pump water at 4J cents for man ufacturing plants it can aJso Dumo it at that price'for individuals nd that it is no more trouble or expense to furnish it ln small quantities than in large. And it Is also claimed that if it costs more than 4 cents to pump the water then the email consumer should not -be taxed to furnish the large consumer with water. The great difference in the price is what" is causing the agitation of the subject. It is claimed still farther that since the city has secured control of the water works tiue price has been v ad vanced Instead of being reduced as it was expected. The public is entitled to some explanation ox the change. Tomorrow will be circus day in Golds boro. The Xorris & iRowe trained ani mal exhibition wad be here ta the af ternoon and for tomorrow night. An order of the Select Knights was organized in this city last night toy Mr. Cv X. Aldridge of Greensboro, who is deputy grand commander of the order. The order Is a fraternal insurance so ciety and la very popular in the state of New York, where it has been doing buslj ness for the past twenty-four years. In fact the order has never gone out of the state of New York up to twelve months ago. Now it is doing business in a number of states and on so Ehort a time has aJbout 600 zn embers in North Caro lina. Mr. Earl M.. Goodwin, late of the reportorlal force of the Raleigh Times, and Mr. 1 JT. iButlet, also of Raleigh, are in the city today as the Advance ageota for the "Lonely "Widow," which is to appear in the opera house here next Mondar nleht. SMiss Bmlly Higgs of Baieigh, who has been visiting Miss Annde 'Pipkin in thds city," left today to Thome! The location of the government build ing is stlH matter for speculation. If the department at Washington has made a selection they have not said anything about It The Washington correspondent of The Post could gratify the curiosity of a number of people and reheve considerable nervous tension by naming the location or mailing inquiries. Mr. H. P. Dortch, has withdrawn the tender of his property on the corner of James and Chestnut streets. The heavy receipts of tobacco on this market from country carts is a surprise to everybody here. The popularity of bhis market among the planters through out this cection is widespread and In creasing from day to day. While, the; price of tobacco is high everywhere this year, still it ts contended "by those who are In a position to know that tobacco Is selling higher on this market than on any other in the state. Both the Im perial and American tobacco companies have buyers here besides a number of local buyers.
