(Max ton, N. C, Sept. l.S The Repub lican congressional convention for the 0th district met here last Tuesday at 10 o'clock a. m. and in thirteen minutes by the watch, standard time, carnled out the pre-arranged plan, which had been;foreordained by the "head center-' bees, and named A. H. Slocumb as the man to be lgnominiously defeated by the Democratic candidate, our own G. B. Patterson, in November next. The convention in the main was com posed of postmasters and office-holders, revenue doodlers galore, all of whom wore Pritchiard's collar and "jumped to the" scratch" when?. the whip was cracked by Ringmaster Spears, assistant district attorney, and Pritchard's repre sentative. It Avas laughable indeed to ee how. the boys difl . cringe and bo w o the word of the boss' representative. There were indeed a few there who were not office-holders, sucih as former Populists, and a very few straight Re publicans, who were there supposing that there was to be a convention; but these -were the exceptions, and the "ex ceptions" were strictly not in it at all. at . all. I have learned that most of these became so disgusted at the cut and dried affair, that they went to the train intending to take it before tho convention met for business. It was a very droll aJEair. The per formers were all placed and, fixed be fore the cuTtain rose, and when at rose it did not stay up long because it was entirely unnecessary. Your correspondent has it upon the very best authority, that the liquor rations were plentiful and dispensed freely by Sv Wr. Taylor, Clocumb's chief caterer, and under his dispensing the boys, or most of them, had a good. time very much. I have also learned that a plan was suggested to endorse the independent candidacy of Capt. E. R. McKethan, a veteran of the Spanish war, who has many kin-folk in this, Biaden, New Hanover and his own (Cumberland) counties, and some of us were afraid that this might be done; but happily it was not, and now we have' smooth sailing for Gib. Patterson for congress. One or more of the delegates was heard to say that the matter was "fixed" at the Greensboro state convention by the' great big boss, and that it was simply and no more than a ratification , of the will of the boss. The postmasters were in it sure enough Wallace the real post-1 r master of Wilmington, the postmaster at MftxtonJ Dunn, Fayetteville, Lum berton and Whlteville and perhap others. It was a roaring fare from start to finish, and the result is , that Gib. Pat terson will win in a walk with hands down. MACKS. $ Winston-Salem Notes ; Wdnston-Salem, N. C, Sept. 20. Spe cial. Dr. J.
