KING BUSINESS COLLEGE address, 330 Faletteville Street .Raleigh, N. C. Shakespeare Club The Shakespeare Club-of the Univer sity of North Carolina has just held a notable meeting. A very large audi ence .took advantage of the open in vftatfon' nnd the attractive program. The president. Dr. Thomas Hume, in a br'v "aldress showed "that one dis tinctive feature of the club was that it dealt with subjects that touch the universal life of man and one of gen eral and unfailing interest. "Romeo and Juliet as a Lyrical Tragedy," Mr. Fred Archer's paper, was a fine criti cal study, presented In felicitous style, of the rythmical forms like sonnets, sextettes, concerts and antitheses and of ".the Elaborate symmetry of the play. Mr H. R. McFadyen. the efficient sec retary of the club, read a happily con ceived raper on "Romeo and Juliet, .Comedy or Tagedy'-in which he com pared the failure of the Spanish Lope to make a true comedy out of the sub ject' - with Khake?peare"s wonderful tragedy 'of love and youth and death. The special feature of the evening was -the 'lecture by Dr. Smith on "The Hnakespea re-Bacon Question." a most Instructive and entertaining discussion, which covered Miss Delie Bacon' ec centric introduction of Lord Bacon as the author of the plays. Ignatius Don nelly's absurd cryptogram, the evi dence of Shakespeare's contemporaries and the general question of Shake . speare's capacity to produce such dramas." The large audience was deep ly Interested and gratified. Its many old alumni members will be . glad . to hear that the club Is a live thing, though seventeen ye;irs old. The Philological Cub has taken on new life. Dr. Hume is president and Professor Toy secretary. It has good work laid out. the nomination by the city Democratic primaries. ' . R, T. GOWAN. . j ii.
