THE MORNIKO.-EjQEtJgBDNESDAT, JULY; 15 1 903 Drugs in Ypur : Pastry. 1 OMMON Baking Powders arc half Corn starch, the other half being Acid-phosphate, or Alum, Some of these are said to be a very injurious, end quite unreliable. - Good Baking Powders are one-fourth Rice Flour, one-fourth Soda, and one half Cream of Tartar. ' These cost 13 cents per pound to manufacture, but yon must pay fifty cents per lb. for them, at retail. ... And it takes 54.40 worth of this Baking Powder to make a $5.C0 barrel of Flour into Tea Biscuitil " PRESTO quick - flour needs no Baking Powder, and very little "Shortening." It is the finest flour milled in America, being rich in Gluten (muscle-former) with a comparatively low per cent age of Starch (fat), while Baker's Flour, for instance, is chiefly Starch, with littleT Gjnten. PRESTO" quick-flour has the exact proportions of Cream, Tartar, Soda, and Salt, that such flour needs, al ready blended uniformly into it, by machinery. These chemicals are the purest made, mixed, with the flour when they are fresh and strong, and then sealed up in air-tight packages that Grocers retail at 10c and 25c The veryjjest flour, and the purest Cream of Tartar and Soda arethus sold in "PRESTO,- at trie price of common flour, combined with Baking Powder, why? ; Because4 PRESTO - carries only a cTVliHer's profit , on the whole product, instead of a Druggists profit on the Baking Powder, or 44 per cent, portion. Then, there's the great labor saving, and the certainty cf results, to consider in its valuation. "PRESTO- makes the quickest, surest, lightest, whitest, and most economical of cakes, biscuits, and pastry. See comparative costs in other .advertisements. Bruner returned yesterday from a trip through the western part of the state for the purpose of encas ing .apples for the North Carolina ex hibit at the Teat St. Louis exposition, a mission on which he reports the most irratlfyin ' success. He also received I pledges of liberal donations of cash for this department of the states exniDii. Mr. Bruner says he found thatvery successful work Is being done by Mr. Hugh O. Chatham and Mr. F. B. Ajen dell in their canvass among the manu facturers of the state soliciting sub scriptions to the fund for the state exhibit and the outlook is entirely sat isfactory to those having the under taking In hand. ' Gov. Aycock In speaking of the situa tion yesterday said that he feels that !he and those co-operating with him; in the work of procuring donations, are "out of the woods now," and with con tinued responses from those not yet seen as liberal as received in the can 'vassto this time there will be no trou ble about making the exhibit thorough lly In keeping with the commercial and Industrial interests of the state. In ena-a trine the apples and other fruits for the exhibit Mr. Bruner ar ranges for them to be shipped as soon as they are prime on the tree and on arrival at St. Louis they will be put on cold storage to be kept until the exoosltlon opens, to be used then as they are needed to keep up the exhibit. It is certain now that the space oc cupied by the North Carolina exhibit will be greater than the state has ever had at any exposition heretofore. The North Carolina exhibit occupied about 400 square feet at the Charleston expo sition. Formal applications have al ready been filed with the exposition authorities for spaces except for ag riculture and horticulture. ' As usual a heavy draft will be made on the state museum for the exposi tion exhibit especially from the -for estry natural history and mines ana mining, etc All these will be select ed, shipped and arranged at the expo sition under the able supervision of Mr. . H. H. . Brlmley, the gifted curator of the museum. ! vr: .. : phen's church-and was a familiar fig ure in the choir at v all services, and being an accomplished musician, she often used her talents in the interest of j charity and for public . entertain ments by "home, talent.. Special. Great disappointment is felt here over the disbanding of the North Carolina base ball league which was composed of teams from Winston, Greensboro, Durham and Concord. The league was formed here last week and' the season was to have " commenced yesterday, Winston coming here for a series of three games.! TheWlnston team failed to Bhow up arid President Brandt had Mr. Webb, whose health is very poor, is much opposed to Mr. Ruffin's leav ing, especially ?a't?hls itlme. One con dition of the tender of presidency of the Raleigh And Neuse mills is that Jr. Ruffln should come , to Raleigh to live and devote his time to the direction of the affairs of the two mills. They would not, of course, object to Mr. Ruf fin's going up to Hillsboro every few days, possibly, to have a sort of over sight of the affairs of the Eno mill, if such a ' condition should be exacted. The answer of ; Mr. Ruffln, as stated above, is expected today and is await ed with anxiety by the, directors of the two mills. He is a most valuable cotton mill manager., having established an ; enviable reputation for executive ability and general business capacity. "For years fate was after me contin uously." writes F. A.
